09:35 26Mar09 UK Retail Sales Drop Sharply In February
LONDON--U.K. retail sales declined sharply in February, driven by broad-based weakness across the sector as the deepening recession weighed on consumer demand, the Office for National Statistics said Thursday.
Seasonally adjusted retail sales fell 1.9% on the month after an upwardly
revised 0.8% increase in January, ONS said. In annual terms, retail sales rose 0.4% after an upwardly revised 3.8% gain in January.
The numbers were significantly weaker than expected, as economists had on average forecast a sales fall of 0.4% on the month and a 2.5% gain on the year, according to a Dow Jones Newswires survey.
The decline was broad based, but mainly driven by steep falls in sales at
nonfood stores, the ONS said. Sales at other stores - principally small
businesses selling items such as books and DVDs - posted their largest decline since the series began in 1995, while sales in textiles, clothing and footwear fell 3.7% on the month, the largest drop since June 2008.
Sales were also likely affected by abnormally poor weather conditions for
February, which saw the heaviest snowfall since 1991, the ONS said.
In line with recent trends, sales volumes at predominantly food stores showed more resilience, declining just 0.3% on the month.
February sales falls came despite continued heavy discounting at nonfood
stores, an ONS spokesman said. However, price rises at predominantly food stores pushed the implied price deflator 0.3% higher than the same period a year ago. Please take the time to have a look around my Daughter's website www.daisypalmertrust.co.uk

Well you've got to eat haven't you?
I'm really not surprised at such bad figures. Low interest rates mean low savings rates, no pay rises or pay cuts or people losing their jobs, higher cost of imported goods all lead to less spending on the high street. Oh I've said it all before haven't I ? ...0 -
Well we're at 1.068 now. Can't see any upside myself despite the fact I have transferred my money now - which should be a sure way of getting the rate to improve.
Okay - just bounced to 1.069.0 -
over 1.07 now...;)Please take the time to have a look around my Daughter's website www.daisypalmertrust.co.uk

Hi,
Im sorry this isnt really related but I cant seem to post a new thread and you all need to know this!
I've just had an experience with Easyjet that may make some of you reconsider flying with them again.
I booked return flights with them and recieved a specific booking reference number that confirmed the exact amount I paid and where and when I was going as happens with all online booking of flights. All fine I thought...but not quite.
I was reviewing my bank statement when I realised that Easyjet had actually debited a completely separate amount from my account under a different reference number.
I got in touch with them immediately to have the problem rectified, as I thought it could just have been an honest mistake.
I then recieved and email back from their customer service team, telling-nay insisting- to me that I had actually made another booking under this separate reference number!!!! Which of course is complete fabrication in an attempt to cover their asses.I have the (lack of) emails to prove it, and a damn good memory.
So I am now letting you all know to protect you from this possibly happening to you in the future. It is an isolated incident and I have flown with them before without issue, but their customer service standards are appalling and you all should be notified!0 -

Michelle,
You're on the wrong forum. However you should make an official complaint to easyjet and inform your bank that the second amount has been taken without your consent. If that fails then you really should complain to the relevant government body - try: complaints@consumercouncil.org.uk.0
