if the oil light comes on then the oil is dangerously low as the evidence in the original post shows us.

anyone know what a sump cable is?

The lights normally come on when the oil is about a litre too low.

It's just an indication that you need a top up.

Not some panic feature to tell you that your engine is about to seize.

The reason you have to stop immediately is because you cannot diagnose whether it is a shortage of oil or a complete loss of oil while you are driving. As the worst case scenario is complete loss of oil and then engine siezure, the best possible advice, and the one given by manufacturers, is to stop the car immediately to prevent the risk of further consequential damage.

The light shouldn't come on - anyone with an ounce of sense will check the basic levels routeenly. Therefore avoiding the first 21 words of the original post...! :D

It is most certainly a panic feature, and one you ignore at your peril. Would you ignore a large cut to your femorol artery? After all, it would only indicate that you need more blood, not that you're about to die.

The only general mass market cars with oil level warning lights are some French cars, the odd Jap car, and the latest BMWs which don't have a dipstick. The remaining cars have an oil pressure warning lamp.

Actually it's a low pressure warning lamp, not low level.

NO IT IS NOT AN OIL LEVEL LIGHT! it is an oil pressure light,no pressure means no oil, which means light on.

Yes you will find oil will be well below the bottom of the dipstick, never mind the lowest mark on the dipstick, before the oil light comes on. I have read somewhere some cars do have an oil level warning, think it was a porsche or something?

I had the oil light come on, then go off and stay off. Then the engine made a funny noise, then it made a louder noise, then I lost power.

I've just spent the past 2 days fitting a new engine.

Lesson learnt, oil & coolant are very important things which should be checked and not ignored until it is too late.

However, after an oil change on my 2nd car today, I'll never be doing it again, I'll leave that one to National Tyres!
