How much is the car you're going to be driving worth?

Not sure, she literally paid about a hundred quid for it recently, think it would sell for 300 or so. :rotfl:

If it does not say you are covered on the certificate then you are probably not covered,

On your certificate where it states who is covered to drive it will say something to the effect

    Insured only to drive

The Policyholder may also drive any private car not belonging to him or hired to him under a hire purchase agreement.

If it does not have the line above then you are almost certainly not covered. Bear in mind if you are stopped by the police in your sisters car they will ask you to produce the certificate. If it does not confirm you are covered to drive other vehicles then they will prosecute you for driving with no insurance unless your Insurance Company confirm you are covered.

The certificate doesn't have this line, but i'm confused as to why their customer services declared quite matter of factly that i can, and am covered 3rd party only. She had accessed my account also, so it's not like i gave her the impression i was on fully comp.

Also, within the policy documents there's a section entitled "Significant Features and Benefits of your policy"

And on the line "Driving a car which does not belong to you" - Yes for Fully Comp, 3PF&T and 3PO.

On the back of that sheet, it has "Significant exclusions to your cover"

And the line "Driving a car which does not belong to you" -
    Use outside of the UK,
Use of a car that is otherwise insured
If your car is disposed of and/or damaged beyond uneconomical repair.

So now i'm even more confused, particularly by the line "Use of a car that is otherwise insured". Surely this is wrong?? I had to re-read to make sure it didn't say "is not otherwise insured" but it doesn't...

[edit] - I've found a PDF online which i think explains the policy wording - page 19 is what i'm looking at

If a policy allows driving other cars it will always state this on the certificate.

I think you need to call your insurer again to clarify the position, and obtain a correct certificate of insurance if the policy does indeed allow driving other cars. Page 18 of the policy wording you linked to spells it out:

"The Insurer will cover legal liability for the
death of or injury to any person and damage
to property caused by or arising out of:
    Cover for you
    1. You using the car.
    2. You using a motor car not belonging to
you and not hired to you under a hirepurchase
    agreement or leased to you
under a leasing agreement, provided that:
    a) your current certificate of motor
insurance allows you to do so
    ...."

It doesn't mention other cars on the cert, just in the policy documents.

I guess i should just take their word for it that i'm covered and stop fretting, but i do worry about these things :o

    DON'T!

Take the advice you have been given here. You aren't currently covered if your certificate doesn't say so.

The CS person who told you you were covered was mistaken, and using this conversation as your defence if caught driving without insurance wouldn't wash in court!

Get a new certificate off them that includes this cover before you attempt to drive someone else's car.

    No, it's correct.

It means that you cannot use the "driving other cars" part of your insurance if you have separate insurance to drive the other car in place (eg as a named driver).

In the case of you driving another car for which you have insurance cover, and have an incident resulting in a claim against you, you couldn't use your "DOC" cover, meaning the claim would be dealt with by the insurance policy which actually covered you (eg. as a named driver).

I wouldn't just take their word for it, I'd ask for it in writing, preferably a new certificate.

Thanks, i think i will ring them in the morning as I don't want to take the risk.

I'm going to be annoyed if it turns out i'm not covered for other cars, as i was bragging to my friend about how good my company is for doing this :rotfl: But luckily i was suspicious and haven't been driving anything but my own.

I shall let you know what they say!

Whatever they say, until they provide you with a certificate allowing you to do so, then don't do any driving other cars.

So i just called, she said "yes you can drive other cars, let me print a copy of your certificate so i can tell you where it is on there"

So i waited on hold for ages, and she came back and said "although the system tells us you can drive other cars, your certificate doesn't say so, so i checked with my line manager who said it's an error and you're NOT allowed to drive other cars".

So she kept talking about how it was a genuine error and how the IT team would get straight onto it .

I asked if i needed to be FC to get that, and she said not necessarily, it sometimes depends on your age and whatever the underwriters put on there.

Well that's nice, if i'd chosen this company specifically for that feature :rolleyes:

Thanks for all the advice, you saved me losing my licence :D
