Thanks Silvercar will do that, suppose they have the stuff that the locals use so would make sense to buy it there.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another, so please feel free to ignore this.

Bear in mind that deet is pretty nasty stuff in itself - lots of people don't recommend you use it outside malarial zones.

Supposedly, Skin So Soft from Avon is a great mozzy repellant. I've not used it so have no idea if that's true.

I spent some time in an 'old style' house in northern Queensland in Aus (no fly screens, no aircon, lizards on the walls) and I used to do the following at bedtime:

    Spray bedroom with fly spray
    Light mozzie coil
Cool shower (gets the heat out which seems to make me less popular with mozzies)
'Normal' (ie non DEET based repellant rubbed all over bare flesh).

It worked a treat until one night I had too much beer and forgot one leg. I woke up with about 30 bites on it.

We have just returned from a week in a villa in Menorca.

We were all eaten alive. Only 1 of us (one of the kids) didnlt get bitten - 4 adults and 4 kids.

We took with us Boots Insect Repellent spray and i'm sorry to say that it was big pants!!!

First night I got 5 bites on my head as did one of the little ones (on his cheeks which swelled up really bad)

The reccomendation from an English guy who had lived on the island for years was not to use boots own as it attracts them more but to use Autan (available on the island from the supermarket) we ended up at the pharmacy and bought some with citronella inside which worked a treat.

At my last count I got bored but had managed to count that I had 40 bites!!
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice

I've been to Zante, Cyprus and Majorca and have never once been bitten, maybe i repell them :D, however I'm going to Egypt (luxor) in sept, will there be mozzies there?

Yes! Have a look at the following page for advice about mosquitoes in Luxor (and much of it applies generally).
    http://www.luxortraveltips.com/essentials/insects.htm

There is also a bit on that page about DEET, which is mentioned a few times in this thread. DEET is a bit old fashioned - originally developed during the war. It stains and is a bit smelly. The web page mentioned has suggestions for alternatives.

Other parts of the same web site may help you prepare for your Luxor trip as well.

I heard that eating Marmite worked and dismissed it. However my OH who is always bitten (and I've never had one in my life) had coincidentally been eating it on toast for breakfast for a few weeks beforehand and for the first time in his life didn't get one single bite. It may have just been coincidence but my poor daughter, who won't touch marmite, got his share of bites!
