blame the government not the manufacturer - if it wasn't for such strict regulation and fear of lawsuits they wouldn't waste their time. Contains Nuts! I the good old days we'd just let the allergy sufferers take their chances. Survival of the fittest and all that.

It seems as if, apart from cases where the product may contain traces of nuts from the factory or whatever, that this is just aimed at people who are too lazy to read all the ingredients.

If anyone actually took a nut manufacturer to court for not declaring the product contains nuts would be laughed out of court, at least I really hope so.

On a slightly different tack they used to add the words "serving suggestion" to product pictures on packaging. On breakfast cereals the cereal was in a bowl with milk...........
There were plenty of other rather obvious suggestions on other products.

Maybe this is just in recognition of the fact that some people just aren't cut out for mornings? Or perhaps the manufacturers think it's an exciting and radical way of serving cereal that wouldn't occur to us mere mortals without a helpful picture illustration? :rotfl:

I think they should label the White House in Washington as follows: WARNING: Contains dumb a$$ holes.

And 10 Downing Street with: WARNING: Contains US President wannabes.

    I'll get me coat. :D

It's the ones that don't contain all the ingredients that get me! I've got quite rare allergies (lime and pineapple), and I was drinking some juice the other week, only had a sip of it, and my tongue started to swell. Looking on the back of the juice, it said it contained "mixed fruit juices", no indications of what ones they were.

well with all due respect if you're drinking "mixed fruit juices" you should know after X years on this planet that that usually means orange and pineapple. Still i do have some sympathy.

Manufacturers can't list every allergy warning there isn't enough room on the packaging, though the amount of packaging we get these days it makes you wonder...

wow the second person I have encountered in a week who has a pineapple allergy! And to think I had gone my whole life never meeting a single one up till now.

If you have allergies, surely its a bit of a stupid risk to drink an unknown fruit juice?!
  • Actual to be correct, peanuts do NOT contain nuts. They are legumes. Of no relation to the nut family. It's only a protein molecule similar to that found in most nuts that caused the problem.

I don't think it's necessarily the government to blame - if we didn't live in a culture where nobody wants to accept responsiblity for their own actions, companies wouldn't be so scared of lawsuits.
I can kind of understand how the letigious atmosphere came about in the States - when it could cost you hundreds of dollars to go into hospital you would want to find out who was responsible to reclaim out of pocket expenses. However in this country people are so greedy and so convinced that supermarkets have some evil agenda that they don't always think twice about whether they could bear some responsiblity for the outcomes of their actions, and start firing off claims and lawsuits willy nilly. The companies don't want to waste time defending themselves against these actions on behalf of hundreds of different suppliers, and so they simply insert an extra stage into the labelling process, thus ensuring that any possible eventuality is covered. It means that allergy advice is often meaningless, but it also means that people who refuse to accept that the supermarket can only protect you from yourself to a certain level have no recourse if they try to gain financially from the situation.
