My opinion-I wouldn't notice if I had been overcharged by 27p, and if I did I wouldn't give it a thought, let alone complain.

....and there are loads of people doing the same thing as you tommo and being taken for a mug by tesco. Overcharging is a serious offence, and my opinion is that they shouldn't be allowed to get away with it, not by me anyway.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

It wasnt the point of being overcharged by a small amount, it was the attitude of the staff that annoyed us, especially when they have a 4 foot sign on the wall behind them, stating that if you are overcharged you get your money back for the item.

How many of us would have gone and offered the extra 27p if the lower price had been put in instead of the higher price?

These things are swings and roundabouts really.

How often has anyone noticed that an error worked in the customers favour rather than in the supermarkets?

By not checking our bill we are letting ourselves be ripped off.
27p is not much but if it happens every time you shop then it adds up over the weeks and months.

Tesco is not a charity, it's a cut-throat business which does everything it can to squeeze profit out of customer and supplier alike.

If we were talking about a small corner shop I would feel different. I have and would point out to them that I had been undercharged.

In instances where the store makes a pricing error to their advantage, causing inconvenience and added expense (ie: time + travel) to the customer, if the store is no longer willing to adequately compensate, maybe it would be worthwhile reporting the incident to Trading Standards ???? Does anyone know if such 'errors' break any laws????

I got fed up with our local Morrisons (come back Safeway, all is forgiven!) where the fruit and veg regularly seem to go off before their 'use by' date; what little I saved by their initial lower cost was wiped out (& more!) by the cost of the petrol I had to use taking the items back, in addition to the time that I wasted in so-doing. The item was either replaced or refunded (like-for-like), and I eventually voted with my feet (or rather, tyres!).

However, this in itself is not always convenient, and so maybe it WOULD be worth contacting TS when pricing errors/standards of quality become an issue; at least the store would then have to (in theory, anyway!) provide a
    better service.

Small corner shops are not charities either.

I don't shop at Tesco, as the quality of merchandise is poor and customer service crap.

My local market is cheaper and better quality, and I don't have anyone monitoring my spending through a loyalty card.

I still don't understand the mentality that 'because it's a big company, it's ok to rip them off.' Ripping anyone off is wrong, full stop. Yes, they may be trying to squeeze profit out of everyone, but if you feel that strongly, don't shop there! Every business is trying to make a profit, they're not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts, are they?

How are we ripping them off exactly? If you are overcharged at the till, YOU are being ripped off. If you don't care that's fine, but why criticise those of us who do care? All we are doing is using their own policies, which are in place either because they are legally obliged to have them , or to increase custom.

No, my comment about ripping people off clearly referred to my earlier point about if anyone would complain if they were undercharged by the same amount. Another poster insinuated that it would be ok to ignore undercharging because Tesco are a big company, I disagreed.
  • Why though is what I can't understand? It seems it really is rocket science for them at times.

First off, I could not believe that you were told on the pre-packed stuff that you bought that it's the shelf price that is relevant - I just had the exact opposite situation where they denied that the shelf price was of any relevance as it was a pre-packed/priced item charging a higher rate (just on this one piece of cheese - All 20+ pieces were as per lower shelf price). Of course, they would not acknowledge the overcharge. (Is this the new way to deal with this?)

Second when I asked to see a manager I was distinctly told "there are none here - its late and they have all gone home." This is a massive Tesco Extra store. I asked a second CS assistant she said "but did you ask to speak to the Duty Manager? we have about 25 managers here!" at this stage I said "as a customer I am not going to ask for a manager by his/her precise job title now am I?"

Third, the duty/night manager argued that I was not overcharged yet offered to refund the difference (albeit a penny in this case but I had no clue as I hadn't worked it out and thought it was more as priced by the kilo). But by this time I was just so annoyed at the 'in denial' act that it became a mission!

So which way is it Tesco? I guess you know & I know that what counts is that it must be clear for the customer. Shame on you Night Manager at CS Gallions Reach Extra store you could not even resolve a matter once escalated to you and even had the cheek to offer me a penny refund after kicking up a huge stinking fuss! You can bet other customers saw and heard and noted the commotion too! Tut tut but very good job that the CS helpline managed to intervene although it really is a shame because these misguided individuals including "managers" are letting the overall reputation down.

Update: Vouchers now received in the post - Thank you Tesco CS Helpline its nice to put an end to the matter.
