    Hi Debtfreein4years,

There's an earlier thread that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

Shouldn't you be recycling that stuff though, not sending it to landfill?

I do re-recycle everytthing i can, but the odd little bit of newspaper is less important than keeping the bin clean. Carrier bags i take to one of the local small shops to be used again, but i'll also use perhaps one a week as a bin liner in the house.
In the last few days, there have been reports on the news that councils are sending the stuff we save for re-cycling to landfill because of the fall in value !!!
But that's for discussion on a different thread perhaps.

  • I have an old mop in the shed just for this job. First I make up a solution of stardrops and boiling water in a bucket then pour this into the bin and give it a good scrub all over using the mop. Pour out the mucky water and to be on the safe side I use a good spray of jeyes fluid or if I haven't got any of that I use disinfectant and leave to dry - I have never had maggots in my bin even when it has been boiling hot.

I hope my nice man doesn't see this - he only charges £1.50;).
    I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.
  • thank you for all your suggestions. ive just tried to find a wheelie bin cleaner to do it regularly but im out of luck so will be attacking it with a stiff broom and stardrops me thinks. will be leaving it for the bin men to empty as i dont know where the water drains to and i dont want a big fine.

I wouldnt mind if my neighbourghs used my bin, it has just annoyed me that they never asked (as they had to go into my back garden to get to it) and have not been and said anything to me about using it. Also just discovered that my recycling bin is toppers with kids toys packaging so i cant get rid of any of my recycling for a couple of weeks.

am tempted to go and bag it up and dump it on their front door step argh!!!!!

It is a bit cheeky going into your back garden to 'borrow' your bin.. my neighbours was out the front, in the street.. they are students and went home for christmas.. so I wasn't that cheeky.. but I did only put cardboard and bags of wrapping paper in it as well... maybe one of their children should be shoved in the bin with a cloth and bucket!!

I'd bag up their rubbish from your recycle bin and put it in THEIR bin...

There may be a little ad in your local paper about bin cleaning in your area.. it may be worth a try?

Or try asking on your local freecycle chat thread if you have one.

  • Each fortnight after our wheelie is emptied, I pour in a bucket of water with one capful of Jeyes fluid and leave it in. I have been doing this for a few years now after the guy on the bins gave me this advice. Don't pour it out as it comes out each fortnight when our bins are emptied. A few of my neighbours do the same. We do also make sure that all of our rubbish is tied into Tesco shopping bags. Every little helps!
