Job is done! Wasn't as bad as I thought.
Many thanks for all the replies - did a bit of a mixture.
Washing up liquid squirted around then two kettles of boiling water poured down the sides to rinse the soap to the bottom of bin.
Left for 10 mins with lid closed for the steam to do its thing, then hard bristle brush used to scrub it all over.
Tipped it out, then used the hose with my finger half over the end (cheap pressure washer!) and rinsed out. Have squirted all over with Dettol spray and put in a wheelie bin liner.
In future I will make sure that all carrier bags of rubbish are not overfull so that I can tie them securely so there is no escape route for any rubbish. Well that's the theory anyhow!0 -
In the days before black bags and supermarket carrier bags my grandmother used to wrap all her rubbish up in newspaper. Her bin was full of neatly wrapped parcels. I suppose newspaper would bio degrade before plastic so it might be a better choice but on the other hand we can recycle our newspapers-0

I quite often use as other have said, bucket of really hot water, washing up liquid, and disinfectant, tip it in, use stiff yard brush then I rinse it using watering can.
As for guinea pig and rabbit bedding, we put that in the "Green bin" if you have one of course. What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots0 -
I occasionally lob our wheelie in the back of the car and pressure wash it down at the garage when giving the car a once over.....There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't
In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice0 -
My main wheelie bin has been smelly in the heat. It has been emptied this morning and I want to clean it. How do I go about this? Yesterday I bought some of that superpower version of stardrops with amonia) would this do the job or would bleach be better?
You can tell its a neglected job!

if you have a garden sprinkler that goes round and round put some jeyes fluid in the bin then turn it upside down on the sprinkler turn it on and there you go lovely and clean0

I'd go with the starclens, well I do anyway. Give it a go with that and some hot water in the bottom. Use broom to give it a good scrub. Empty, rinse and leave on side to drain for a bit, then air dry couple of hours. Bob's your uncle, clean fresh bin.
Done every month it stays clean with just a quick swish round. Make sure your house number is painted on or like me, one of your neighbours may " confuse" your sweet-smelling one for her filthy manked-up one!! Soon put that one right! You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
We just pressure washed ours too or use a hose and turn upside down after to dry it it works fine without any chemicals.Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j0

Not very money saving but we have someone who comes round once a month to clean ours. I think it is about £6 for two bins. You probably think I am lazy, but one of these bins is for food and organic waste and it gets so dirty, slimy and smelly (especially now in the heat) that I just couldn't face cleaning it myself. We used to DIY before we got that bin.0
