I did what churchmouse suggested and it has come up well. No pressure washer sadly. Think I might paint the number on now though ...

Another poster suggested Jeyes fluid. I tried this 2 days ago and it seems the best thing so far. The bin still smells nice 2 days later which, it didn't do before when i was just using bleach and disinfectant.

you are all tackling the problem from the wrong end!
what you should do ,and it works, is to drill about a dozen holes in the bottom to allow it to breath!
for those without an electric drill, just heat up a poker or bar on your cooker ring and burn it through after turning bin upside down.

    rog.

I allways put loads of shredded paper in the bottom of our "Food Bin" to line it before anything else goes in. All the waste food does not stick to the bottom.

Someone on another suggested tipping a bottle of cheap bleach in the bin once a year. No need to tip it back out.

I wouldnt burn holes in it, this can give of dangerous vapours from the plastic burning

My neighbour has but a airfreshner in heres, one of those that stick to the side of the bin.

I myself dont go for chemicals, i just use a hose and vinegar or lemon .
  • Been away on holiday and someone has used my bin and its absolutly disgusting, there is sticky gunk all over the lid and the inside smells like off chicken.

would i be best bleaching it or is there somehting else i can use to clean it and get rid of the stench?

    thanks

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Bleach, bicarb or zoflora with boiling water should do the trick.

I would use a broom to scrub the inside of it.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
  • Jeyes Fluid mixed with some water and a a good scrubby stir with a broom is excellent. Afterwards tip it down an outside drain and it will (providing the bin wasnt' too skanky) disinfect the drain as well! Be very careful if you have a cat or other pet though as it is harmful to them.
