i used to, but now my mum has found out so only ever buys me actual presents, or gift vouchers! i'm planning on learning to drive soon so suggested she pays for my provisional licence as an Xmas present. so she gave me a cheque for £45 made payable to the DVLA!
You mum is the same as mine then! she refuses point blank to give cash out as gifts to anyone!
personally i put anything i can towards debt now but my birthday falls mid month so usualy the monthly payments have already gone out and i end up spending my bday cash on a nice bottle of redfew more months to go and i will be drinking champagne when i give birth!!! lol

my folks often give me vouchers to but I usually spend these on clothes for DS or gifts for other people so I can keep my money for the debts - probably amounts to the same thing though!
in otherwords... I'd pay it off the OD.Mortgage OP 2025 £7050/7000Mortgage OP 2024 £7700/7000

I get a little money off parents for b'day or xmas and it always just gets put in bank & gets swallowed up, i don't make the conscious effort to buy anything with it (I prob should) but it helps with everyday living.
I guess it depends what you would like to do, maybe you could treat urself with half of the money so u don't feel hard done by & u got a treat.Who says I have to be normal?0 -
The money I get for birthday etc normally gets spent on paying debts unfortunately. Hopefully when i become debt free I can spend MY birthday money on myself for a change :j
I know this year birthday money will be going on debts, i just want to pay my debt off as soon as possible, so chucking every penny i have at my debts.
If you can pay your debts each month and happy with just paying that then why not enjoy your birthday money? unless your like me and want to clear your debts ASAP!0 -
Yes for as long as I can remember, I've used my Birthday money to pay off debts & before this I used it to buy my Dad's birthday pressy as his birthday is the day after mine & had to rush out & buy something on my birthday for him.
Used Xmas to live on so we didn't add to our debt.
To be honest it doesn't bother me, feel better spending that than taking extra out of the bank.Comping again - wins so far : 2 V festival tix, 2 NFL tix, 6 bottles of wine, personalised hand soap, Aussie miracle conditioner

No, gift money is for treating yourself, without guilt.
If I ever get money I spend it on extra beauty treatments I don't usually have (but need, LOL).0 -
I have to admit that I always spend my birthday money unless something is absolutely pressing (sometimes u have to be selfish), but my debts have never been so severe that I couldn't afford to.... Its my birthday a week on Sat, and if I get any cash it will go towards a pair of boots I just won from Ebay, with the rest going into my ISA (thought I'd better put at least a couple of quid in before the end of the tax year!)
Having said that, if I was in OP's position, I would put the money towards the debts.... but remeber that you are 'owed' that present when u can afford it!

Ive decided to definetely put it in the bank *sigh* There's no way i'd be able to afford paying it off otherwise:rolleyes: Im £60 overdrawn so it wont pay it all off then im going to be charged £20 for being overdrawn then £60 more for a bounced cheque and another payment *scream* *panic panic* Its been years since mine or ohs 'gift' moneys gone on anything other than debts or bills, one day one day....'They only had one cow!'0

Obviously your debts are important but be careful that you don't inadvertantly hurt somone/pee them off.
I'm in my early 20s and it's only now that I'm beginning to get a feel of what it's like when your well thought out presents aren't appreciated. E.g. the book that's never read, or never mentioned, or the money you sent for something special is never mentioned and it all seems forgotten.
What I mean is, if you have to spend it on debt right now this minute, make an effort to treat yourself to something and make it clear to whoever gave you the dosh that you did appreciate it.
E.g. if you get given £20, even just buying yourself a £5 book, at least you can say to that person - I buoght a nice book with the money.
As I said, I do appreciate the debt is imporant.Amo L'Italia0 -
