Would you spend your birthday money on your debt?

In the past mine and ohs birthday/xmas money has always gone on bills. Its my birthday on wednesday and i know ill probably get £30/£40 which i was hoping to get a camera with. BUT my bank account is overdrawn (because of their stupid charges) so ill probably end up putting it in my bank  Have you ever had to pay bills/debt with money youve recieved as a gift? Have you made a conscious decision to put any 'gift' money towards paying off your debt?

    No, No and No!!!!!

You've got to have a little luxury every now and again otherwise it wil just grind you down. My birthday is on 26th and my DH wants money from our joint account to buy me a birthday present!! Hmmm, don't think so somehow, I'd rather have nothing!

I have and I do, but not all the time. If the bills are pressing, or I need food of whatever then I would very gratefully spend 'gift' money on bills. If however I'm 'on track' with DFW-ing, and there is something I really really really want, then I will buy it (after shopping round for the best deal of course!).
In the situation you describe, I'd put the money to the overdraft to be honest.

Though I don't very often get gifts of any variety, truth be told!

whilst i can agree with your thinking ...if the op is going to get charges addd to her od then it wouldbe better to use that money to try and avoid this ...when she is df or even as mozette says on track then the time for treats can happen

i used to, but now my mum has found out so only ever buys me actual presents, or gift vouchers! i'm planning on learning to drive soon so suggested she pays for my provisional licence as an Xmas present. so she gave me a cheque for £45 made payable to the DVLA!

I'd spend it on the debt, being debt free is the best present I could get!
Thanks for the advice Martin! :money:

  • I can't even remember the last time I spent birthday money on myself. It has always gone on groceries, the children (when they were younger) and now towards debts or the emergency fund!

I'd rather have a box of chocolates to be honest. Then they are ALL MINE!

OP - I would consider paying those nasty charges :0)

It's my birthday on wed too and yes I have spent birthday money on bills. Last year I asked my oh for a prepayment prescrition thing which was really helpful as I was spending loads on prescriptions. now Im better he's buying me 2 tyres for the old banger I call a car! My sis who is broke is doing jobs around the house which need doing but I can never find time for.
