my bank account is overdrawn (because of their stupid charges) so ill probably end up putting it in my bank  Have you made a conscious decision to put any 'gift' money towards paying off your debt?

It is not entirely your bank's fault that you are overdrawn.

Most people have debt because they historically spend more than they earn on lifestyle-related "gifts" to themselves.

The best birthday "gift" is to work towards being debt free. This will enhance your happiness in the long term.

When I had a lot of debt I used to use my birthday/Christmas money to fill my car with petrol!
Sounds really sad but it felt like a treat!
I didn't use it to pay off charges because it would just get swallowed up in further charges and made no difference.

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

why dont you pay off the OD with it now, then pay yourself back when you can afford it and go buy yourself a gift then.

Yes, and I used most of my inheritance from my mum to pay off my debts too.

Will you be able to use your camera to photograph items for Ebay and make even more money?
Then it would definately be an investment.:)
Either way, don't beat yourself up....put it towards bills or a birthday gift for yourself...whichever you feel you will get the most from.

Yep, that & my bank charges refund cleared most of it. It did what she wanted it to, helped improve me & my DS's lives :)

If you can manage treat yourself, but if you are going to get extra charges then it would be better to put it in the bank & treat yourself another time when you have a bit more cash in the bank. We had to use OH's birthday money to make sure we had enough money in bank to pay DD's. It's a horrible feeling, but we made sure she treated herself a few weeks later when we had a little more cash in the bank.
