I sold an 02 freelander through them a couple of years ago, had no response from the web, but quite a bit from the Book. it was bought by and older bloke who did use the net, so i would do both next time also

We're just in the process of selling two cars on Autotrader, a Honda CRV and a Lexus. We're moving to Switzerland, so they seriously have to go.

They are both good cars, full service history, excellent condition, so what we did was got the cars professionally valeted by one of those bods who come to your house (completely brilliant, cost £60 per car, and he took 6 hours to do the two). Then we parked the cars in the pretty church car park over the road and took LOTS of pictures - I believe Autotrader allows 9 online.

Then we checked prices, and put ours on at about 10% similar models. The Honda went the next day, from the online details, and the buyers had travelled over 150 miles to come and get it. The Lexus is still up for sale - the paper catalogue comes out today, I think, so I'll see if we have more calls based on that.

It's also on Ebay, so we're having fun checking if the number of people who're 'watching this item' has grown - up to 14 so far!

Good luck with yours - valeting, as many good photos as poss and a keen price cut are my suggestions!

Be very careful who you let drive your car,i have sold several in autotrader going back to when it was automart!!

Most have been sold but you have to put up with time wasters and firms that want your money for intros. to none existant buyers,as already stated. The big problem i had was having my car stolen on a test drive,my husband was with the punter, sorry thief!! and got out to let him drive,he locked the central locking, moved over to the drivers seat and sped off.We got the car back undamaged,it was found by the police. The thief was driving round looking at cars in the one he had stolen then stealing another and leaving the first one at your house!!!He had done about 10 and was already on bail.

There are some funny people out there.
:) There are two sides to every story.

I've sold a few of my cars via the auto trader paper version and they have always gone within 24 hours of the mag going on sale.

I put alot of down to how you write the ad. Personally I don't bang on about the gadgets as most interested people will know the spec. Instead use the wording limited to detail that it's been bought from the main dealer / owned from new etc and focus on the history of the car, which is most peoples prime concern and this approach has always served me well.

Don't be persuaded to buy two weeks advertising for an extra £XX. If it's going to sell it will within the first week.
  • I sold my late fathers car on the auto trader web site and i have to admit it was the most annoying thing i have ever had to put up with i was plagued with what i can only describe as nutters, i had emails from people claiming to be agents for kings of god knowswhere just why they think a king would want a 96 astra is beyond me lol , offering £1000s for the car we were only asking £750 and wanting to arrange shipping to wales! another wanted the car for filming in the end i was glad to see the back of the car

I just sold a car online with AT ..loads of pics but most importantly the PRICE.only £2000 below dealer price seems a lot to me.bearing in mind a dealer will prob be offering 12 month warranty.

I'd rather have £2k in my pocket than a warranty on a 3yr old car. I'd take the risk that it been fully and regularly serviced that there wasn't going to be much wrong with it. Plus it's £2k below ono - so they'd prob get it at £3k below.

BUT if you arent getting any joy....the price is to high. If I was spending 15k on a car I would go to a main dealer. I guess there are lots out there who wouldnt hand over that sort of money to someone they dont know and then get no warranty or come back if things are not as they seem

What is it £2k below? ..I have just bought a car from a main dealer (off internet) that was below book price and £2.5k below my local dealers

Have you considered listing it on eBay Motors. It is one way of getting a quick sale.
