I have The Readers Digest Good House Keeping Book from the late 1980s. The money section is out of date but the OS housekeeping, cooking, cleaning, making gifts etc is fabulous.0

They also have 'Falling Cloudberries' reduced to £7.99 (rrp:£25) which is a fantastic book and would make a great gift too, plus they have 'The Organic Meat Cookbook' for £4.99 which I haven't read but looks interesting.

Ohhhh Gryfon!

Can you hear them dropping into my shopping basket?"You can't get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me." - C.S. Lewis0 -
I'll second 'How to Survive Without A Salary' by Charles Long.
It's all about being a 'conserver' rather than a 'consumer'.
The basic idea is that by living frugally you can afford to give up full time work and earn a living by casual work. It is not so much frugal hints and tips, it is more anecdotes and theories on how to consume less. Some of the stories are very funny, such as when he decided to save money by washing in a thunderstorm and got struck by lightning...
Mr Long is a bit more tongue-in-cheek about the whole thing than Mrs Dacyzyn (author of the Tightwad Gazette). Unlike the Gazette, the book doesn't assume we all live in country houses in Maine!
However, it is a Canadian book and I get the impression that the frugal life is a lot easier in the US/Canada where the cost of living is much cheaper than 'rip off Britain'. One of the central premises ,for example, is that one should own one's own home outright before giving up one's salary - well that's me and most people in Britain stuffed for a start then! :rotfl:'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -

For a more literary but inspirational read, Walden by Henry David Thoreau also deserves a place on the OS reading list.0
