There was a thread on it last year in the Green and Ethical board. It was "discussed" at length, and IMO it was a load of rubbish. Nothing more than a publicity stunt!

Hi joanie,

I think that this may be the thread that geordie joe is referring to:

Earth Hour - 29th March - 8pm

As this thread doesn't specifically relate to Old Style I've moved it over to the Green and Ethical board.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Have just read through the thread, geordie joe, and wanted to congratulate you for taking the time and energy to stand up for yourself and common sense. I thought you were given a tough time by the 'holier-than-thou' crew.

• There are a few historical buildings around here that are illuminated all night at great cost to the tax payer and in some cases congregations.

The only people that seem to appreciate them are drunks who can't see them and police on the night shift to whom they are old hat. If they switched these off I'm sure there would be a fair bit of loft insulation for local council tenants.

In fact it could save councils even more as they would be able to use the funds to switch existing street lights to low energy street lamps.

Just a bump to say that we took part last year and loved it - just as a test to see if we could 'survive' an hour of nothing electonic... it turns out almost 2 hours went by when we thought only one hour had...

I have signed up for this months' event at 20:30 on the 28th March and have placed a link video on my blog for those who are interested:

Hoping as many MSER's will take part and even if they're not 'green' still do it to save some cash in the process x

It always seems to me (looking from a plane anyway) the biggest culprits are astro-turfed playing fields, probably hockey fields. Floodlight bright as day with no one in them at 11pm at night.

I thought street lighting was already low energy? That's why so much of it is orange sodium lamps.
• Depends where they are city centre lights are generally more powerful at around 250 to 400 watts. Residential are lower wattage - energy efficient ones being around 35 watts.

Well - I was all gung-ho to do it - then went further onto that website and saw that Richard Branson was there advocating it - at which point I turned a bit sceptical (as in Richard Branson - errr....of the Virgin Airlines....). Hes certainly no-one's definition of an environmentalist considering that fact....so I'm sorta inclined to wonder how many of the people/public bodies/etc advocating it are "genuine" in their environmentalism - or whether its a bit of a "token gesture" thing?

Sorry to cast a dampener on things....

I know a one hour switch off is only a token but if we don't get the message across soon about the dangers of global warming, it will be too late so everything which encourages awareness is to be encouraged. I hope to participate. It will be a good opportunity to give our wind-up lantern and radio an airing.
