Well, I've signed my guides unit up and we are planning to meet for it and hold a meeting by candlelight - no elec.

I'm not convinces that one hour will make a difference either, but i do think it ought to be used as a start point, to get people thinking that perhaps they can if they get used to the idea of not needing to use as much elec.

    Hi all,

My hubby and I have done this for 2 years so this will be our third. I agree that whilst on it's own it may be a small gesture, it does overall change how you see energy use and can start a routine of perhaps switching things off for a night a month or even a week.

As far as I remember no issues have every been reported of EON or British Gas collapsing when people turn things back on again. I am sure they would have been the first to pooh-pooh the Earth Hour concept last year or mention how terrible it is, had that been the case. Mind you they can't support it and yet can't not support it :p

For the record, MrEL and I don't make any special purchases nor do we have anything electrical on - no tv, no laptop, no lights, nothing on standby and usually might have a nightlight or two on, but that's it.

I don't really see this as a 'make the governments more aware' activity, more like a personal responsibility activity to get into better habits because we all know change happens quicker with us, not them, but can change policies and corporations over time... It's also not really about outdoing anyone on a carbon footprint side, just creating awareness and reducing consumption overall.

I do agree though that birthrates going up in 9 months won't be the best result :D

Why the heck are you all punishing yourselves?

Everyone knows climate change is NOT man made, it's all a con!

Research both sides of the story, don't just rely on Greenpeace / IPCC etc.

Would have done this but my daughter won't sleep without a light on, and the clocks go forward tonight so she's going to lose an hour anyway, she needs to have a good sleep so we'll be keeping our lights on I'm afraid! Maybe we could sit in the lounge in the dark though
