Being hassled by E.ON

Good morning

I was wondering if someone could advise me on the following matter?

I was contacted by a debt collector to pay a debt to E.on (back then Powergen). The problem is that I have never opened an account with them (never called them to do so, never gave them my account details and never signed anything). Back then I was one of the many tenants of the house, and we used a metered card system for gas and electric. Minimum worries for student tenants who would live only for 10 months in shared accomodation.

I have tried to settled the matter with them to strike my name off their records, as I think a fraud was committed. My old tenancy agreement was sent to them, and they assured me that they would correct the matter. Problem is the matter is being dragged on (on their side) and I even think that the matter might have been passed on to another debt collector.

What should the next step be, as I think this matter has been falling on deaf ears at E.ON?

I have contacted Energy Watch but they have not been very helpful.

Also what should I do to make sure this matter will not affect my credit record which has been perfect until now, as I always settle my debts?

I would appreciate any suggestions on the matter! Thank you.

If you're sure you have never had an account with them (and were never named on an account in multiple names) then my first instinct would be to write to debt collector stating that:

    1) you do not acknowledge any debt owing to them or to Eon
    2) you have no record of ever entering into a contract with Eon
    3) if their records show otherwise, then they are to provide you with a copy of the contract bearing your signature

More than likely the debt collector won't reply, but at least you'll have made a first attempt to resolve the matter.

    Hi BindiBahji

I have indeed gotten in touch with 1st Credit the debt collector, and did send them a recorded letter 2 weeks ago. As you said, I didn't receive a reply from them, and I did mention things along the line of what your post says.

Unfortunately I think that they (at 1st Credit) might have passed on this debt to someone else...So although E.ON is "supposedly" in the process of sorting the matter off they haven't called off the Creditors.

I agree on your second point about "a copy of the contract with my signature" which of course they wouldn't have, but the E.ON supervisor I have been speaking to alleges that nowadays you can open an account over the phone without signing anything! Don't know if this is true or not, but it is not reassuring at all!!!!!

I am writing a letter now to E.ON stipulating that as I have tried to handle the matter according to what they have requested from me (old tenancy agreement from my stay at the address in 2005) and my entire cooperation to solve this matter, they should strike my name off their records...I will add in the letter what you mentioned about obtaining some written proof that I did sign anything with them...

    Thanks for your reply

If EON were the supplier before you moved in then you do not need to sign any contract, you will have agreed to them being the supplier simply by using the power.

Now that E.on own the database they are chasing me all over again!!!! for problems i thought were sorted 5 years ago. I still don't know what i am going to do, perhaps phone watchdog!!!!
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.

    Hi Hello Kitty

How many of us are out there? The watchdog show could be a solution...
Do you have anything in writing which shows that you have settled the matter 5 years ago?

E.On have recognised that I wasn't at the address for the most of the period covered by the bill (the bill covers a period from Feb 06 to Jul 07, but I moved out July 06). But they haven't settled the fact that I NEVER opened a gas account with them. Nothing is been formally settled yet.

    It is getting frustrating!

It doesnt matter whether your a student or not you still have to sort out your suppliers.

I see accounts everyday where people are after special deals or pleading ignorance 'because were students' and theyre own stupidity has got them into trouble.

    Hi Stimpo

    it was the landloard's responsibility.

It was the landlord's responsibility as per agreement in the rent.

This doesn't solve the issue that I have ever opened an account with them/spoken to them/written to them, etc.

    Any advice please?

Would the Energy Ombudsman help also?

is it possible that you were paying on BG cards by mistake when the supply was actually with e.on?
