OP you sound like you have your head screwed on, and as someone said the house you are looking at is maybe a tad big for a FTB, there is nothing stopping you looking at smaller properties in the meantime and don't take heed of people asking if your relationship will work out and what if your GF falls pregnant, you know how secure you are and if you worried about things like this then you aren't going to get anywhere in life, you may as well stay with your parents forever. Its all based on what ifs what ifs!

This thread is enough to put anyone off buying a property, thank goodness I did it when I did!:rotfl:

Thank you Han2505! I thought I was the only person thinking this way! Its exactly like that, you do manage eh? I bought my first house at 21 and that was after meeting my OH for 5 months!!....and yes I'm still with him!LOL

The houses are lovely and yes they are doing smaller properties but they really are like boxes. The surrounding area isn't too brilliant as it's right in the heart of the town in something they've called a regeneration area.

We do want to live together, we just can't afford to right now, at least not there.

I'd think about the area - ok for two people driving to work but if a few years down the line the house may be ok for a family but the area may not be which may affect your kids but as importantly people with kids who'd consider buying your house. Regeneration area often means loads of social housing mixed in with the new builds, problem families and schools where kids learn to set fire to stuff..... not always but I'd check out the social mix / local school reports to see if it would affect prices...

I think everyone has got the fact now poppyolivia that you managed to buy a house- you can stop rubbing it in everyones faces now! everyone is different and just because it worked well for you doesn't mean we should all follow the same strategy.

Whilst your experiences add to the pot, the OP has a different set of circumstances as the house market, wage inflation, the econmy etc are all different now.

Please consider whether on the wages you were on at 21 you could have afford to buy a house at today's prices. Perhaps you would like to tell us how much your first house cost that you bought when you were on the same amount as the OP is now.

    Hi Amos

Have followed this thread with interest and I think your making the right decision.

Stay at home and save, save, save! Then in a couple of years you'll have a nice sum saved up for a deposit. And the prices maybe lower ;)

Thats what me and my bf are doing and we're 24

Good luck and keep us posted

The strategy also involved getting a partner.

    Not everybody is that lucky.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't jealous.. of course I would love to own a 4 bed 2 bath house (btw 4bed2bath is not bottom of the ladder!!!) but despite me and OH having good jobs and saving it's just not possible - we're very happy renting a 3bed1bath though (I guess this must be in a ditch below the ladder in your view though)

I'm 'positive' about owning a property and work hard and save my money so that one day I will get there. Being 'positive' though doesn't affect the market fundamentals and I'm able to make a rational decision. I have worked out that I will get where I want to be quicker by renting first. Why do you want everyone to be so positive- are you a bit touchy perhaps because you are worried about the price of your house falling??

I didn't ask you to tell me the price of your current house, I asked you for the price of your 1st house.... i wonder why you don't want to say that?
You also still haven't said whether you could afford to buy your house at today's prices.

Yes, there's nothing between you and my studio flatlet at all is there.
I've got a whole 15' square (rounding it up).

Perhaps you live in a cheaper area than others. Some people live in areas where they could not afford anything on their single salary.

For the record, I am not jealous. I have cash in the bank and am minimising my outgoings by choosing to live in a studio. To rent a studio is £150/month less than a 1-bed (rent, council tax difference). I'd rather have that £1500/year compounding at the bank.
