Carpeting question

We even have quality underlay and carpet in the bathroom as well - I know it's not recommended but if you're careful it's OK.
And the smell of a newly carpetted room is great - don't you think?
I know this is slightly off topic but it is connected: what are your views on carpets with white fibre backing? I think it's better than foam backed but not as good as hessian. Is that correct? For a staircase, do you think the white stuff would be ok or should we stick to hessian? (I definitely wouldn't get foam). Or do you think the underlay is more important? We had a carpet company round to give us a quote and they said white fibre backed carpet is fine and that we should re-use our existing underlay which seems a bit odd because it's been there about 20 years! We reckon we will be in this house for about a year but will want the carpet to still look and feel decent at that time for resale of the house.0 -

Whatever the backing, hall, stairs, & lounge really need quality carpets in my opinion - with top quality underlay.0 -
ALWAYS use hessian backed carpet on the hall, stairs and landing, that's where you get the most 'traffic' (as they say in the trade
). You can't buy foam backed anymore, it's feltback now.

Yep, I think I've heard it called that.0 -

That's answered a question I was just about to ask
We only have carpet on the stairs and landing and need to replace it , so was going to ask what quality carpet is best for there. My Mum always used to tell me the best carpet to get was made of 80% wool and 20% nylon , is there any truth in that? Also with having cats I really would like something easy to clean so are carpets that are treated with 'Stainmaster' or whatever worth getting?Same old same old since 20080 -
Sheel, your mum was right
Ask for 80/20 twistpile, carpet samples usually have an info label on the back. Stainmaster is a waste of money, it stops dirt getting into the carpet (the dirt sits on top) but when you clean it the Stainmaster comes off too.

Just read this thread and I've no advice about carpets, underlay or fitting men!
I just wanted to say.......................Can you feel the love in this thread?!

Hi
Just a quick suggestion. It's always worth going into your local carpet store (even a chain like Carpet Right) and ask one of the general members of staff (not the managers) directly:
"I'm just looking for someone to fit a carpet actually"
Most of these stores use local tradesmen, and you can be sure that they know how to fit a carpet properly.
If you want to be cheeky, then ask them what sort of quote you can expect (based on area / number of rooms)...
It's always worth asking the question...CarQuake / Ergo Digital0 -

Hi Sheel
Wool/Nylon mix is good quality. Only thing is if you need to be able to get stains out, sometimes 100% synthetic is best. Certain stains are a nightmare to get out of wool, stainmaster or not, and you can always douse the synthetic stuff with 1001 carpet cleaner without worrying.
HTH:D
EDIT - forgot to mention...some of the 100% synthetic carpets are really good quality and look fab. Shop around and see what you think...If it was easy, everyone would do it!0 -

Hummmph, it was my thread (the other one) and Pink gets the love
As regards fitting men, in the small, private carpet warehoue I use they are all self employed so if you find a good one best ask for their number so you can use them again.
ps djohn, it was me in a fit of pique that closed my thread, sorry0
