Thank you, what I meant to ask is quality underlay quite a bit more expensive?

Depending on what you pay for the carpet, the underlay I mentioned above can be as dear if not dearer that the carpet, but worth every penny.
Not only improves the feel but increases the life of the carpet.

    Oh, Please, Please, Please.

And now I've been and pressed the wrong button. Must be the state you've got me into.

Tell you what I do know is if you have that expensive underlay (like canvas with foam rubber wrinkles) called duralay I think, then it was guaranteed for something like 20yrs. That shouldn't need replacing unless of course it's been down for that long.

Enough penance or do I have to do more?

Lol....Enough! You are forgiven! :) I am extremely grateful for your advice regarding my underlay!

What do you mean you pressed the wrong button? Are you saying that you really didn't mean to thank me? ;)

What can I say without digging myself into another hole.

Can I just take the forgiveness and keep my mouth shut?

djohn, that's probably the best way to go ;) .

While we are on the subject can I say to you both, without predjudice you understand, that I was probably not blameless either. :o Sorry.

I was going to try and explain that I really wasn't getting at you and EdingburghLass over the over thanking thing but about everyone in general, but the thread was closed on me, but I now realise that should have been done on a thread elsewhere but by the time I saw that thread I thought better of it anyway.

    Probably a good idea traff.

Now that we've got all that out of the way, does anyone know what I should do about my underlay?

    To keep or replace?

Yorkshireboy.......I accept that it's worth replacing for general living areas, but what are your thoughts on childrens bedrooms?

djohn........it has got foam rubber wrinkles, but as far as I'm aware it hasn't got a name. It's been laid about 10 years.

Any other opinions much appreciated, especially tips on finding someone to fit a carpet.

    Thanks,

    Hi Pink

I recently laid a lot of carpet and did some shopping around cos I was going to be out a fortune.

I eventually found a local wholesaler (the guy who supplies carpetright, etc) in my area, and bought my underlay from him.

    So cheap!

The stuff in the shops was really thin (the orange underlay everyone seems to sell), and was £3.99 a metre in the carpet shops.

I bought top of the range stuff for £2.12 a metre.

Find your local wholesaler and lay the really good stuff. I love walking about in my bare feet - it is really worth it!

Edit - I bought my carpet from a local independent shop who agreed to fit the underlay I bought elsewhere so my carpet fitter came from there - sorry can't help more on that one. Cheers
If it was easy, everyone would do it!

personally I wouldn't replace the bedroom underlay but I would the living areas............................a lot less wear in the bedroom:D but check it (especially if you didn't lay it),as long as it isn't ripped etc, leave it

We don't differentiate between rooms - the bedrooms get the same treatment as the living rooms and stairs.

We even have quality underlay and carpet in the bathroom as well - I know it's not recommended but if you're careful it's OK.

And the smell of a newly carpetted room is great - don't you think?
