Why do you want a credit card? More to the point, how will you pay the debt back?

You can probably take 'some' benefits into account, but not benefits as a sole income..!

Why are you being a smart a$$ about it.. ?

The OP has come here asking for advice, it is pretty damn obvious he won't get a card, you are just trying to look clever.. nice one..

Not obvious at all. Moneysupermarket.com has a smartsearch feature. I just did a search saying I'm an 18 year old unemployed person, living with parents, and had defaulted on credit agreements in the last 3 months (could be overdrafts, mobile phone etc etc). It came back and told me that my credit profile is Poor (surprise, surprise). But it still lists 7 cards aimed at someone in those circumstances (Vanquis, Aqua etc, usual suspects). The interest rates are from 27.9% to 39.9%.

One reason for someone taking these on even at these crazy rates would be to try and build a credit history - i.e. buy a newspaper once a month and clear the balance in full so that you start to get some positive credit history without actually paying any interest.

Obviously if the OP gets a card and goes on a spending binge then he's digging himself a hole, but that's another story.

The OP asked a question, and the answer is yes, there are cards designed for him. If he operates them responsibly and doesn't fall foul of their obscene interest rates then he'll be in a better position to get better deals if his circumstances change.

So, I think you'll see that YB is correct in what he's saying. Would you like cream with that humble pie?

I know you can get a credit card if you are not working, you can simply state that you are working on the online application form, they don't seem to check, and I'm not suggesting the OP tries this, but a friend of mine did this when his car needed repairing and had no funds and needed it for an interview. The card arrived in days.

Yes, it's deception to gain a pecuniary advantage.

They'll place a CIFAS 'Application Fraud: Material Falsehood' marker on your credit file, meaning when you *do* get a job you'll find it very difficult to obtain credit for some considerable time.

It's good that you stated you weren't suggesting it. I almost thought you were, what with the obvious insinuation that it worked and had no lasting or measurable consequences.
  • my mothers on income support and she has a number of credit cards and store cards (always pays off in full), she hasnt worked in about 18 years

CannyJock is correct, when you have no job you can get a credit card

It seems to be the norm these days for a Minority to take on debt and when the going gets tough go bankrupt. However I am not suggesting the OP has any intention of doing that.

But there's a growing number of people who would like to use a credit card for online shopping to take advantage of some of the internet deals you can get. And then there's Quidco that I've just started doing where you can get cashback on the things that you're paying for anyway.

Used responsibly, a credit card can be a great tool for the day to day stuff and doesn't have to lead to bankruptcy.
