When you had the new hardware fitted, its drivers would have had a dependency on the M$ .NET framework for installation (or you have installed .NET using Windows Update). This creates a second user account ASPNET.
There are 4 conditions required to have the Welcome screen go straight to the desktop.
1. Only 1 user account (other than Administrator and Guest)
2. Single user account has no password defined.
3. User account is not part of a domain.
4. Fast user switching is enabled.
So, Renee, you need to re-establish those four conditions, i.e. delete the ASPNET user account, and change your 'Ren' account back to remove the password you've applied. All this is done in the Control Panel -> User Accounts.0 -
This is untrue

OK Renee, that means your account doesn't already have a password so that condition is satisfied.

Toxteth_OGrady wrote:Rather a categoric statement! Don't want to turn this into a flame war but here's a description of what the ASPNET account is (written by an M$ MVP), how it incorrectly prevents autologon when installed, what the registry fix is to correct it, and why you can safely delete the account. If OP's system is pre- .NET 1.1 SP1 and yours is post it would potentially explain the difference in behaviour.

but what has the OP said to say that they arent (or someone who uses the machine) a .net programmer and hence by deleting
"You can remove this account, but it is vital if you do asp.net development work on your machine.
By removing the account you may find your ASP.net projects will no longer function correctly. "

i wouldnt take on the bet because i would say that he isnt either, but for someone reading through the thread in future may well be and may take t advice to delete them hence kinda why i brought the issue up

Valid point, Reg!
Somehow though I doubt that a programmer would be seeking advice on the MSE Techie Stuff board.
Anyway we're venturing OT and hijacking renee's thread.
Always makes me chuckle on boards when the 'cogniscenti' go off on a tangent and get embroiled in a deep, technical discussion. The OP must sit back and think "Well that's all fine and dandy, but I haven't got a clue what your on about. Could you just fix it for me!'
Time to pull together on this one, methinks.
