Before I had some new hardware fitted, the desktop automatically came on. Now I get a screen saying, To begin, click your name.
Is there any way I can get the old desktop back
Thanks

You can try this
Go to control panel, User Accounts, click on "change way log on or off" tick the box "use the welcome screen", click apply options.
hopefully this will workDon`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
It might be that you now have more than one user account on your PC. Check out http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm and see if method 1 answers your question.
I think that just means it uses the Windows NT login screen rather than the XP login welcome screen. So same problem.derrick wrote:You can try this

Thanks Derrick and 1234
I've tried both ways.
I now get a message saying 'The system could not log you on,make sure your username and domain are correct and then type password again' When I click OK I get the screen with my name on.
When I type 'control userpasswords2' I seem to have 3 user names.
1. Administrator
2 ASPNET
3 Me as an administrator.
Is this a hopeless case0 -
All of those are perfectly normal; nothing to worry about.Renee wrote:When I type 'control userpasswords2' I seem to have 3 user names.

Normally, the welcome screen only appears if you have other user accounts in addition to the above, have enabled the so-called 'Guest' account, or have protected your account with a password. Whether the cause is one of the above or something weirder, the solution should be the same: disable Fast User Switching.0 -
Are you sure you typed in the username and password correctly in userpassword2?Renee wrote:I now get a message saying 'The system could not log you on,make sure your username and domain are correct and then type password again' When I click OK I get the screen with my name on.0 -
