I think you have become too debt focussed......probably a crime to even breathe such a thought on here!! but the fact is you will never get back the time with your kids and if you are comfortable your life needs to reflect that,or what is the point?

It is important to pay off debt but more important to live for the moment, whilst doing so. Imagine the worst case scenario with regard to your family...would you regret the pizza or a similar incident or regret not paying an extra £50 off the mortgage?

Maybe you need to refresh your budget, and allow a little extra into your everyday monies from your savings monies? Don't forget, everything has increased in price over the last 12m, from fuel to food.

Why the desparate urge to reduce your mortgage & save? Why not enjoy the times with your children & allow them to enjoy their time too, without the appearance of being pennypinching?

You will never have this time with your children again - they will soon grow & leave home....to leave you with just memories. Do you want those to be of the "why are we so poor?" type?

I have to agree with church rat.

Why are over paying the mortgage and putting savings away while getting in the red every month. That makes no sense.

Even Martin would not agree with that. It is pointless having savings if you are debt.

I think you need to ease up a bit as you will be make your self very ill.

All the best what ever you do.

  • wow £34k off your mortgage in a year?!! i can only dream of earning that much let alone putting it towards a debt.

sorry to sound harsh, i don't mean to be, i'm v tired (too much working!) so probably can't think straight to put this more diplomatically... but what's the point in earning so much if you can't enjoy it?
I'm not saying you should go and blow lots of money on silly stuff but you're in a great financial situation so why not enjoy a little more of your hard earned cash, after all, no one knows whats round the corner in life.
Who says I have to be normal? :p

Seems you've done the most important bit ...you've seen where there could be a problem ....Looks like your parent radar is working fine ..Maybe time to lighten up a little ...I think you have to be aware your kids won't know how much you've made the future a bit easier ...They will if they need help later on ...But there is also today ...Don't make a reason (that is avoidable )to miss out on the good stuff that makes the journey pleasurable..
My daughter collapesed yesterday ,We found her unconcious ,With her legs and arms shaking on the floor ....That not only scared me ,but made me think about how quickly things could all change ...She seems to be OK ...And I can only hope it's a one off ...Don't forget what it,s all being done for..

hi globalds---hope your DD is feeling better today, what a terrible experience for all of you. things llike this really make you reassess what life is all about. we were really lucky and our DD is much much better now, but I really regret worrying so much about things that just seem so unimportant now. All that worry stopped me from enjoying the family that I had and I would would urge everyone with children to enjoy each day with them. Hope all goes well,

  • Knocking all that amount off your mortgage is amazing but maybe it is time to cut yourself a little slack.

Unless you have a 0% overdraft you are probably paying more in interest on your debt than you are earning on you savings which isn't something you should be doing.

With your guidance your daughter will be able to learn the true meaning of friendship and if any 'friends' do start mocking her for not being able to buy the best/funkiest/most up to date of everything, then she will realise they are not really friends.

You aren't poor, but you are over-tightening the belt a little too much possibly.

  • I really sympathise with the pressure to give kids everything they want - mine are taught well in terms of money saving and not falling for adverts, but there are times when they'll feel left out, because some people seem to throw money at their children.
Since when did school kids start eating out at Pizza Express on their own?! I'm not ancient but when I was in my teens we felt independent getting a bag of chips in town. Expectation is so high these days - and that's why we are a nation in debt. I think it is really important to teach children about getting value for money, and valuing treats - which (by definition) don't come along every day.
