skintchick wrote: »hi. I just read that you split the bills half and half but your OH eanrs more than you. Me and h2b have decided when we get married and live together we will split it according to proportions on what we earn (see below). Can you do this? It is much fairer and would free up some cash for you to pay your loans (which has to be a good thing).
Anyway, we are going to do it like this:
add up all bills and this is A
h2b's wages are B
mine are C
So, add up B and C, to get D, then work out what percentage of D, B is, and therefore what percentage C is
EXAMPLE: if h2b earns 600 and I earn 400, his percentage of total wages (1000) is 60 per cent and mine is 40 per cent.
So he will then pay 60 per cent of the bills, and i will pay 40 per cent.
We have included annual bills for both of us (cars etc) as joint bills, and the relevant proportions of those will go into savings for when we need them.
We've also allocated equal percentages of wages for savings, and what is left is ours to spend as we wish.
It is a much fairer way of doing it and I think it is something you should consider.

Thank you for suggesting that. Definitely what I would want to do but not sure how he would feel about it. I like that everything is 50 50 but he does work from home so using up elec gas during day when I'm at work. I can really notice the bill jumping from when he went self-employed.
Had a go at him tonight about elec bill and he blamed me for having hot water on too much. Sometimes feel it goes round in circles but when he has pc, tv etc on all day every day then loads of stuff going in garage, how can i not blame him?!

well if he works from home then 50/50 is definitely not fair on you! It's fine to be splitting them but it needs to be proportionate to what you earn. At the moment he must have way more disposable income than you and that sin;t fair either! (IF you do the percentages method he still will have of course, but you both end up with the same percentage of your wages as spare cash which is obviusly fairer).
I think you may have to be firm with him o this one especially as he works from home and is therefore using up leccy etc. Surely he can see he should pay for this? DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

I think he does and he does claim it as part of expenses which is a bit annoying.
I would want mortgage to be 50 50 but utilities split say 60 40, he earns around 50% more than me. The problem is he spends it so quick and is useless at budgetting. Was thinking of a joint account just for house and then we put our share in so neither of us have any surprises coming our of our personal accounts?Make £10 a day challenge - £21.00/£290

Exactly what we are going to do! A joint account for the joint stuff and our own accounts for our own.
I still think you should do the percentages thing but I would - it was my idea! H2b thankfully saw the sense of it and agreed. He earns a lot more than me. :j
