I believe that if you are called by HSBC and you are unsure about the veracity of the caller, then you should ask them their name and dept and then arrange to call back on the usual telephone banking number and ask to be put through to them. This way you know it is HSBC (would probably apply to other banks as well)0

I too got a call from this number today and asked to confirm DOB and post code. But here is how he asked
1.> Your DOB is nn, can you confirm the month and year ?
2.> the first bart of your post code is ABC, can you confir the second part ?
The call was regarding my application to start a current account and it was a genuine call.0 -
There are several banks that do this - I've had debates with the call-handlers about this very issue. It's dodgy practise to say the least - leaves customers wide open to scammers who may duplicate the call, because they have no way of verifying that it is actually the bank calling!
I'm amazed that this security lapse continues, apparently unchallenged, when website/online protocol is so strict.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
I was called by this number this afternoon and having not known the number and being barely able to understand the caller I didn't give any of my details until they were willing to tell me what the call was regarding, which of course they weren't. I said if they wanted to contact me they could do so in writing. I also made contact myself via online banking. The number however has continued to call through the day and now knowing what most peoples opinions are about it, and there's lots when you google it, I've been cancelling the call.

At what point does this constitute harassment as opposed to just being pains in the backside.0 -
ADVICE:::
DO NOT CONFIRM YOUR DETAILS, WHATEVER ANYONE HAS STATED HERE.
IF YOUR BANK WANTS TO INFORM YOU OF SOMETHING THEY WILL NEVER RING YOU AND ASK YOU TO CONFIRM THAT -
You may wish to ring HSBC customer services, by doing so you can sort two problems in one, you can see if they do want to inform you of something and if not report this number
DO NOT however give your details over!!!DELETE ACCOUNT.

They're now not even on the line long enough for my mobile to start ringing, it just gets logged straight as a missed call.0 -
I had to go to my bank HSBC, this morning to discuss my overdraft as I'd gone over my limit and wanted to avoid this happening in the future. All was sorted out and I came home.
About two hours later I got a call from 08007838422 but it only rang twice then stopped. About half hour later I got a call from (supposedly) HSBC, asking for me by name. I was asked my date of birth and postcode and I gave it, the rest of my information (ie address and phone number) was given to me by the caller. To be honest I didn't quite understand what he was saying due to his accent but it did seem to refer to my overdraft and the limit I was over so to me it seemed like a genuine call. As I didnt understand what he said I now feel I ought to return to the bank and ask them to clarify what it was about and why I should have received it in the first place.
Are these calls really scams ? This call seemed so relevant to what I had been to the bank to discuss but now I'm a bit concerned to say the leastMary

To add to my last post, I had to ring the bank this morning due to having problems with the banks website letting me on to check my account. The lady I spoke to was very helpful, gave me the balance I was trying to go on-line for and when I mentioned yesterdays phone call she confirmed it was a genuine call concerning my overdraft. I asked her to ensure I do no get contacted by phone again as I'd requested at the bank so hopefully it won;t happen again.
(Still having endless problems using internet banking -first time I've tried it - doesn't accept me !!)Mary
