I went to ASDA at Stanley (Co.Durham) on Monday night and the young lady who served would get 100% for customer care. She had to go to the main chiller then cut off a peice about the size of a mobile phone, sealed it and gave it to me with a smile. When you go to the till they ask what is it and you say "it's yeast, It's free from the bakery" if they even ask.
The difference in bread is amazing - No yeast taste!
If your that shy you could collect half my freebee from Sacriston (Co. Durham), I could even leave it out side if your that shy:rolleyes:Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:0 -
Yep. Agreed.
Just ask if there's any yeast available please - and they're always happy to let you have some. Only once in the last two years has there not been any available because they were running short.
Yeast can be frozen too (though it'll keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks or so) and I keep mine in portions in an ice cube tray. You can also set up a perpetual yeast culture so you don't need to buy it. John Yeoman tells how to do it in his book 'Self Reliance' but you can probably find the info on the net somewhere.'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0

I live in Spain and getting live yeast here is a bit tricky. I'm in Uk next month so I might ask for some yeast in local Asda.
My question is this...will it be OK in my suitcase for about 10hrs then on the plane for a few more hours0 -
I would say its worth trying it. Its free so no loss if it doesn't work. I would put it in a cool bag with an ice pack if possible though and that should see you home alright.
Good luck.Tess x

Hello again, thanks for all your replies.
Been to tesco, got the free yeast, bonus!
Got value flour and big bowl to mix it in.
Got home and realised i havent actually got any s0dding loaf tins!:o
Anyone know where they do any cheap?
Thanks xx0 -
Do you need it loaf shaped? If not, shape it into a round (or an oval, or plait it, make rolls, use your imagination...) and put it on a baking tray.0

Hi there Destiny... sorry only just saw your post
- I get a big bowl and weigh 500g bread flour and stir in 3tsp salt.then make a well in the middle
- Measure out 300ml tepid water, add about 12g fresh yeast and 1tsp sugar and stir until dissolved -pour it into the well in the flour, and then pull the flour from around the sides to cover the liquid
- put a carrier bag over it and leave until the yeast begins to bubble through
- I then put the bowl in the sink to save mess
and use one hand and start to mix it...use the other hand to turn the bowl round to mix... once its in a ball knead it for a couple of minutes then drop back into the bowl
- swish the carrier around so it fills with air and place over the bowl and leave until doubled in size (you can put it somwhere warm...but i leave it sat on the worktop whilst i do other things;) )
- tip it out onto the work top and knead for a couple of minutes and then shape and drop into a 2lb loaf tin -greased with a little oil -push the dough down into the tin
- do the same thing with the carrier again and place over the tin until the doughis about 1.5" above the top of the tin... whack in the middle of a pre-heated oven - 230 until golden brown
- to check that its done -tip it out of the tin and "knock" on the bottom -it should sound hollow
and if you want it to stay fresh for longer you can add a bit of butter when mixing -but it doesn't last long enough in this house to bother :rotfl:
Oh and when you get a bread tin.... try not to wash it.. i just wipe it out with a bit of oil on kitchen towel
It might take a couple of attempts to get it just how you like..but once you do you will never go back
if you need any more help feel free to PM me-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50
