If you do a fresh install of Windows from the installation CD it will detect the current OS and ask if you want to replace it, to which you should answer 'yes' It will then give you the option to fromat the drive.
Does your installation disk contain SP2. If not it's best to create an SP2 installation CD by slipstream.

if I do a fresh instal via the disc it wont install anything, cos the disc is older than the version on my comp (windows update)
but I dont want to go down this way again! all I want is to know how to rub the comp clean, if I cant do it, the hammer is going to find its use in life
I did say it was a long story and it is, AND I dont want to go with all that again, I just want to start all over againThe message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters.

No need to shout.
You could try Google!!
However, put in a blank floppy, go to My Computer, right-click on the A: drive and select 'Format...........' in the context menu. In the format dialog that opens check 'Create MS-DOS boot disk' and OK.
Leave the floppy in the drive, power off and then power on your pc. Assuming A: is first in the BIOS boot menu, your PC will now boot into DOS running from the floppy. You will see:
A:>
Just type in format c:
If the floppy isn't the first boot device when you power on you will have to go into the bios to change it.

why cant he just boot off the xp cd? thats what i do...dump xp cd into drive, make sure bios reads cd first and hit a key when it says press any key to boot from cd...
then into the xp setupy screens from there? in those screens you can format the drive as you please before the install starts.0
