  • If you are going for a normal checkup, you will get a glasses perscription, I wouldn't recommend getting lenses based on this perscription and would say your best off getting a free lense trial at Specsavers or elsewhere.

The perscriptions are not always the same, and you may find that you can't actually manage with lenses, better to have a trial then just go and buy some & find you've wasted your money.

My lenses perscription is different to my glasses perscription and due to having a slight stigmatism is one of my eyes, I had to try a few different lenses until I found ones that were comfortable.

I started on monthlies but after 3 months got fed up and wasn't wearing them enough to justify the cost (only £13 a month) so cancelled them, and just then went & got some dailys from Asda but they wouldn't give me any til I had another contact lense check up, so be warned that you may have to pay for initial checks if you are switching.

For what its worth, I think glasses are far better value, I may have just shelled out £245 for 2 pairs (I have to have thin & light lenses) but I would cost me more in long run to have contacts....
  • I agree with others that it's worth having a trial. Specsavers do five days worth of dailies for free, and you have to prove to them that you can put them in and take them out yourself (takes a bit of getting used to).

I got lenses just after Christmas and wear them some days and my glasses some days, as I like to vary my look.

You've got nothing to lose by having a free trial, but I don't recommend signing up to Specsavers dd for lenses as they are much cheaper online.

    contacts!
i get mone from specsavers. its £12.50 a month. thats for the lenses and cleaning solution and all your check ups are free then as well .you also get a discount if you want to but glasses as well. you are meant to always have glasses with you just in case and when you are not wearing the lenses. i have had lenses for 9 months now and i wish i'd gotten them so much earlier!!

  • I have had lenses for 3 years now, they originally cost me £22 a month from optician, but now I pay £95 from asda online including solution, I get that back from the hospital fund too. Monthlys are better than dailies, if you will wear them a lot, if you wear contacts occasionally, dailies are better. I have learnt lenses have these advantage over glasses
    - they dont steam up
    - they are always there, no searching for them or sliding down the nose and so on
    - baby doesnt try take them off and chew them
    - can chop onions without watering eyes
    - its nice to have 2 looks
    - can wear sunglasses, its good to see without having to squint or carry round prescription specs and so on

You know you need a pair of glasses anyway in addition to the lenses? The first eye test you are booked infor is for the glasses. Then you (pay) for a separate test of contact lenses, the prescription will be slightly different and will include the size and so on. You will need the prescription from the optician to get contacts online.
Personally, for me, its money well spent to have contacts, I actually have quite nice glasses now, but I have too many horror stories of being called face furniture at school and it will stick with me for life!

You're got really pretty eyes, so better if they're not hidden by glasses. Give the contacts a go. x

  • I couldn't live without my contact lenses. I have a nice pair of specs too, and I suit them, but I really hate wearing them. Contact lenses are great. I get mine from specsavers and pay a tenner a month including solutions. They get delivered to the door as well so no popping into town to collect them.

  • id say contacts are an unneccessary expense, especially if watching money very closely. Glasses are expensive, but its a one off cost and most of it is down to the frames, which can be reused if prescription changes in future. This is only my opinon, im a glasses wearer but sometimes feel contacts are all about vanity?? I'm sure I would probably look better without glasses but they help me so why bother how they look?
