  • I use Toybox to support my two children, and I've found it's been great. Really enjoy getting the updates every few months, and although they're a Christian charity, I don't think they have religion forced on them at all.

A quick point on charities admin costs using an example already given. Heal. While I'm not criticising their intent, using only volunteers without sufficient expertise has resulted in their producing accounts that are purely business accounts, and not compliant charity accounts. With their level of income they are legally required to have an Independent examination done annually, which forms part of the accounts, and they have failed to do so.
So they may have low costs, but they are not compliant with UK Charity law and there are no checks in place for their financial affairs.
It's not hard to find out what a charity is required to do - the Charity Commission has plenty of guidance on their website - so to me this shows a lack of interest in doing things properly. Which makes them a charity I would not support.

Have you emailed/called heal with your concern? What was their response?
Was this from the charity comission ?
  • sponsor a child at https://www.foreverangels.org

Have been there a number of times, wonderful place, and I guarantee 100% of the sponsorship money goes directly to the care of the children x

  • Hi,

I used to sponsor a child through one of the main charities, but I never like the idea that only a certain amount of my money getting to the orphanage. Then I managed to get direct details through that charity and I cut off the middle man. I've created a great relationship with the people who run the orphanage. I've been sending parcels to the kids - and it's incredibly rewarding to hear the stories about how much the kids loved the clothes, sweets, toys and jewelry. So here are some contacts to some orphanages that are in dire need - it's a real eye-opener to find out how much they struggle:

Sierra Leone - currently suffering from Ebola outbreak
Type on Google: The Needy Today Sierra Leone

Details: Houses 191 orphans between the age of 5 and 13 affected by the Civil War

    Cambodia
Type on Google: Sok Orphanage cambodia

Details: Houses orphans affected by extreme poverty and political conflicts

    Vietnam
Name of Orphanage: Duc Son Orphanage
typo on Google: duc son orphanage vietnam

Details: Houses orphans between the age of 2 months and 37 years affected by extreme poverty,
  • I wonder whether it's possible to request a ledger from a charity - has anyone ever requested one - just to see how your donation is spent?
  • Direct contact details

  • I would like to sponsor a child directly I.E cut out the middle man as i don't trust charities

Anybody know how to contact an orphanage or even better the orphens in need directly ( have tried google) and maybe set up some payment method with a child or two directly with the orphan NOT the orphanage as they are no doubt linked with the charity who i want to cut completely out of the equation

    Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks in advance.
  • You could try Goa Outreach they are a small project and would be delighted of the support. As their work is Outreach they have very little overheads so that more money goes directly to the children and where it's needed. Check out the blog via the link below.

  • How much money arrives at the cause? Far too many fat salaries and big offices in London in the charity industry.
