It is not the TV that has a "discoloured patch which stays for a couple of minutes after you turn over" but YOUR EYES !!

It's a form of "retinal burn" where it is possible for the cones or rods at the back of your eyes to become "saturated" and as such still have an electrical output of an image into the visual cortex part of the brain after the image has been removed.

Absolutely right on that one, I suffer from this quite a lot when viewing a tell tale sign is that you will commonly get a slight negative image of profiles in close up shots such as news bulletins which fades very quickly, some people are more susceptible than others and many eye conditions carry this problem with them.

To demonstrate this to yourself next time the banner is displayed simply turn your set off and you will still experience the same effect, or even avert your eyes from the tv it doesn't matter the image will still be there, this kind of problem tends to creep up on you and can get worse, its probably just got to a stage where it is more noticeable to you that's all.

Then again you could always just have a duff tube but if your the only one in the room that experiences it then I'd get your vision checked anyway just to be on the safe side, I have found since using lenses with the barest of a tint that the instances I experience have been greatly reduced, viewing tv in a dark environment will tend to agravate it, a soft illumination such as a low wattage table lamp can help if you are not keen on use of overhead lighting for films and such.
Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.

Together we can make a difference.

Sorry to say you're wrong, but you.. are... wrong.

I often leave my TV on the news channels when I'm on my PC* or doing other tasks. Most of the time it's on Sky News, and of late, they've had a breaking news banner on screen more often than not.

When I turn around (or look up) to look at the telly I see the burn patches. I know the difference between what is burnt on to my telly and what is 'burnt' on to my retina (I've done all those optical tricks). FWIW my old TV didn't do this and this TV is more susceptible (sp?) when set to RGB (probably to do with brightness, who knows?)

Great explanation, but sadly it's nothing to do with the screen burn on my TV.

*and no, it's no the white screen of the PC causing this either! ;o)

Well, he isn't right about what *I'm* seeing - in my case it is clearly CRT screen burn.

But if it goes away after a minute or two then it is not burnt into the CRT face is it ????
TRUE CRT burn will allow you to see the faint image even after you have turned the TV off.
I've encountered this hundreds if not thousands of times in the computer industry where I worked for 27 years. I've replaced so many CRTs (Cathode Ray Tube) in computer monitors where the "login screen" could be seen from across the other side of a room even when the monitor was turned off, that I've lost count.

Having missed the Bush I was looking at a Philips for £200 @ Tesco - this Panasonic sounds good though.

What else can I call it? I know it is only temporary but I have no idea what the term for temporary-discoloration-in-a-screen-burnt-like fashion is called. And I'd imagine if I left the TV on a still bright screen for long enough it would become permanent. How long, who knows?

They call the eye thing 'retina burn' but that isn't permanent either.

Okay, cool, so what is it my TV does? Does it have a name? I know my CRT TV isn't unique as I had a Hitachi that did it in the past and my parents' most recent TV does it to some extent too.

    Cor, I wish I hadn't pointed this out now! :o( ;o)
