Latest details for Tunisia (North Africa):

Since I made the post on page 1 things have changed. Here are the latest details...

    Country Visited: Tunisia
    Make of Sim: Tunisiana
Cost of Sim: Twenty Dinar (about £8.00) - this includes twenty dinar of free calls, ten of which must be used within a couple of weeks, and the rest within three months.
Ease to obtain: In Sousse the main Tunisiana shop is at the south end of the Promenade on the corner, upstairs. They speak good English and you get a ticket to be served. It can be quite busy.
Otherwise there are numerous phone shops that sell the sims, but make certain you're not paying over the top!
I presume the sims are easily obtainable in other major cities too i.e. Tunis, Sfax, Gabes etc.
Cost of calls: to UK - about 30p/minute (a little less than the International Call boxes - known as Taxiphones in Tunisia!). Local calls very cheap - several hundred millimes (100 millimes = 4p).
Anything else that may be helpful: You must take your passport to obtain one, and fill out a form that includes your UK address. You can choose the phone number you want, starting with either 23 or 24. So if your home number is <area code> 543210 you could have 23 543210 if available.
Top Up cards are available in denom. of 5, 10 and 25 dinar, but the five dinar one only gives three months to use that amount, the others give six months.
If a call is not made at any time over a period of three months your SIM becomes blocked and you must take your original form in, again along with your passport, for it to be re-authorised. I'm not sure if there is a fee for doing this.
One tip: be careful of your mobile being stolen in Tunisia.... and remember, the police don't want to know....
  • If you are going to India best is to get a SIM card in India.. To find out the best plan that suits your need you can try out this site called www.yourbillbuddy.com .. it tells the best postpaid plan based on your usage.. pretty popular in India ..

    Country Visited: India, Karnataka
    Make of Sim: Airtel
Cost of Sim: 99 rupees (no call credit with this) (75 rupees = 1 pound)
Ease to obtain: Requires proof of address in India, 1 passport photo, photocopy of passport (shop did this) (Proof of address can be an employment letter, not scrutinised.) Widely available.
Cost of calls: 661 rupees card gets 294 local minutes or around 20 to UK. Higher value cards are much better value for money. (Use of any Indian mobile in a different Indian state constitutes roaming so may be more expensive)
Do you know of a weblink to the tariff http://www.airtelworld.com/4/circle_vouchers.htm
