  • You don't 'buy' yeast from the baker's - you ask nicely and they give you some free and gratis !

You don't need special flours to make Chapati or other similar flatbreads/wraps, use whatever you've got.
Google for Unleavened Breads for loads of recipes - there isn't a country on the planet that doesn't have some sort of basic bread - the most basic just being flour, water and perhaps a small quantity of fat and salt

  • As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread to give you more ideas ;)

  • Why buy yeast? Commercial yeast is a product engineered for speed and uniformity rather than flavour - similar to apples being on the shelf because they look nice rather than taste nice.

Unless you are in a desperate hurry, then make sourdough bread using a sourdough culture you keep in your fridge. Sure, it is not nearly as fast as using a fast acting yeast, but with your own starter you'll have both locally present wild yeasts and bacteria helping to develop your dough. The wild yeasts make your bread develop non-uniform holes (compared to commercial stuff); the acidity of the sourdough helps keep the bread fresh for longer and the bacteria give the bread flavour much more character.

You're not really comparing like-with-like when talking of a artisan baker's sourdough loaf and a mass-market commercial loaf. Both have their place, but if making food for your family, maybe trying to squeeze the time to make an excellent loaf, not just a cheap loaf is the answer.

There are quite a few bakeries poping up that sell sourdough bread - you'll pay for it though - but you'll be tasting excellence...which you can also do at home!

yes but the recipe says cider vinegar, if you use apple cider vinegar then that is actually a remedy for yeast allergies.

    Hi everyone,

I wondered if it is possible to make bread without yeast? I have all of the other ingredients at home.

Is it possible to substitute it with baking powder?

    Thanks.

You can make Soda Bread which is lovely, if you don't have buttermilk to hand you can sour it with vinegar.
I promise that I will do my best.....
