hi
thanks, yes i will look at recipes for sourdough etc, and try making bread without any yeast.....
it's interesting what the supermarkets are running out of, as it shows how many more people must be baking bread in this weather - which is probably a good thing if a few of those who don't usually bake decide they should carry on the new habit once the snow goes...
I have just thought - why did DH not just buy some bread - but as we always bake our own i think it just did not occur to him to buy bread:rolleyes:
I don't want to go out of the house again now until kids go to school on monday - but yes, the idea of asking bakers for fresh yeast is a good one, and i will try that next week if still no supermarket supply
yes, i was thinking of chappatti's but i thought you might need special flour - but i will try the wholemeal flour version and see how it works,
thanks

The above soda bread recipe is gorgeous and if you have no buttermilk you can sour normal milk with lemon juice or I believe, vinegar, and it works just as well :T:eek:0 -
thanks for sour dough suggestions - one further question though
how do i sour milk with lemon or vinegar? just add lemon juice / vinegar? how much?
i might try it tomorrow.... and save my one sachet for as long as possible!

we don't want to make another trip out again now....DH never thought to try the bakers ....... but we will if we can not get any in the supermarkets next time we venture down to town...
our village has no shops at all - but many of the other mum's at the village school do bake so i might phone around and see if anyone can "lend" me a few sachets early next week...

Hi
I see others have already talked about sour dough. Here is a recipe that we were planning on using to make our own starter. Incidentally when I watched the programme it looked so easy.
Google River Cottage sourdough recipe.

Yeast sold out in the larger shops here too, same with bread flour so if you do venture out phone first. Ebay sellers also have yeast, I have ordered fresh before & frozen itOne day I might be more organised...........
