Don't throw animal fat down the drain in the first place! Let your roasting pan go cold, scrape out the hardened fat in lumps and throw it in the bin. Wrap it in an old bread bag if you're worried about melted lard dripping out of the black sack.
My Granny used to let the fat go cold in the frying pan and just reheat it the next time she needed it, didn't even put it in the fridge. She lived to 91 so it can't have been poisonous ;D
Alternatively you can clean and reuse the fat. Scrape the grease into a saucepan, heat till it's clear and runny then sieve it (metal sieve!) into a heatproof bowl. It keeps well in the fridge for the next time you have a fry up, or you can use it in pastry.

I am sure you can make feed for wild birds with the hard part of used cooking fat. I think you mix it with seeds (makes sense ) but not sure of a recipe. Anyone?I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe0

I watched a programme once about people who worked down the sewers (life of grime or something)
They showed the sewers and the sides were ABSOLUTELY COATED with fat. It hangs down like stalactites from the top of the sewers. It causes so many problems and feeds the rats. :-X

I lived with my Nan & Grandad. There was always a frying pan and chip pan in the cupboard with the lard already in. Obviously it must have been changed occasionally ;D , just never remember it happening
I hated having my eggs fried in the pan that the sausages had been fried in :-X
I'm a veggie now - wonder if thats why?
And isn't it hilarious how things have changed sooooo much in such a short time. I'm sure my Nan & Grandad would have regarded grilling bacon & sausage as 'the weirdest thing EVER' ;D Why would you use the grill when you've got a frying pan full of lard to use!! And not adding Salt to the potatoes - well, wouldn't be worth cooking in my Nan's eyes. And if my Grandad couldn't have his spoon of sugar on his orange sandwiches - oooooo, hell to pay! ;DSometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...0 -

I've seen lots of posts out there about non-stick pans. The best way to keep a pan non-stick is to not wash it.
I know it sounds :P yeugggggghhhhhhh, but really it isn't.
When heat heats fat, it's a very high temperature and bound to kill any germs.
Debris etc in pan can be wiped away easily (when cool) with kitchen roll or something similar.
No food poisoning in our house......well not so far :P0 -

We use lard all the time! Fry eggs, sausages etc in it and cook our Sunday beef with it too! Our local Spar sells it and so does Sainsburys.
Since I posted this I haven't been able to get any lard from anywhere!!!
However, my dad told me about a butcher he goes to that makes their own. So Ive now managed to get some! I think I will throw my lard away from now on and not drain it down the plug hole. Don't like the thought of it all going into the sewers feeding the rats!0 -

My mother-in-law (who is no longer with us) also had these sort of habits. She salted everything and insisted on putting bicarbonate of soda in with the boiling cabbage too because it made it look greener! ??? I told her that doing this got rid of the Vitamin C from the cabbage and who cares how green it is anyway, but she wouldn't listen and carried on doing it!0 -
Here's one RSPB approved too.
I made a version of this last night, only I used an old juice carton. When you put your nuts and fat in, let it cool and then cut squares out of the sides. Punch a hole in the top of the caton and thread some string through. Voila, a bird feeder for pennies ;D
BTW I used a 1litre carton that has a ridge on the top, such as a fruice carton , they are ideal.0 -
I get my sausages from Asda they are cheap 49p but quite fatty,I always have loads of clean white lard to pour into a tub when I finish cooking them in the oven or micro.0
