TBH the standard of written English has definitely fallen across the board. i teach in a College and textspeak is common in essays and letters. I blame the mobile phone! and the seeming lack of will by many Secondary staff to correct bad spelling and grammar. We are doing the kids of today no favours by taking this lax approach IMO.0

its just a loop hole in the system. Someone i know at uni got all his loan as a grant so got 10 grand for no reason cause his dad changed jobs but didnt start new job straight away; so was unemployed at the time of the assesment......even though he now has a £250,000 a year job.0

How did he get a £10K grant?Gone ... or have I?0 -
To be honest the standard of written English has definitely fallen across the board. I teach in a college and text speak is common in essays and letters. I blame the mobile phone and the seeming lack of will by many secondary staff to correct bad spelling and grammar. We are doing the kids of today no favours by taking this lax approach, in my opinion.
My English skills aren't the best but I had a go at improving that for you.

Your comments came across as really bitter, and implied the student in question was somehow cheating you, and that because of her actions you were losing out. When in reality what she does has no effect on the monies you receive whatsoever.
I apologise if it seemed that way, i meant to show that my 'bitterness' was directed to the system and not her! I'll make that more clear next time.0 -

.
Thanks for that, but I was typing quickly and during a short break at work. This may account for the typos and use of abbreviations. However, I assure you I would never use abbreviations when writing in an official capacity or when writing a formal letter.
There is a time and place for everything, and abbreviations are acceptable to (most) people on a forum.

I get a £4510 loan (the maximum) and a tuition fee loan of £1300 or something. That's it. I have £4510 to pay rent, bills, buy books, pay for equipment, travel to and from uni, travel to and from home (250 miles away). £4510 isn't much money.
If I was on the "new system" I'd have money thrown at me: even my university offers a £600pa bursary to students whose parents earn what mine do, but only if they're on the "new system". :mad:0 -

Is that a wind up?
You cannot get a £10k grant for HE! There would be a lot more students about if there was that sort of money available! :rotfl:0
