The system is flawed.
Something doesn't seem to add up.
To get a full grant her parents must be earning under £17k.
Where do they get their money from? Do pensions not count as taxable income? Do they have income from investments/savings?
If they claim the daughter pays rent than that would also count as taxable income and help push the parents income over £17k.They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!0 -

They are not on pensions, they have retired early! Their only income is their daughter's 'rent', which I'm sure is under 17k!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Fair enough. I'd just assume that these retired 'rich doctor and lawyer' parents would a pot of savings/investments/pensions to make them 'rich' and buy this house for their daughter. If their income is really just their daughters rent then they could probably swing the loans and grants to their advantage but I wouldn't term them rich - poor with a nice house maybe.

I live with my boyfriend but it still goes on my parents income due to my age.
I get £3040 a year (roughly) student loan that I pay back.
I get £2700 a year that I dont pay back (grant)
I get £1000 bursary a year that I also dont pay back.
I earn about £200 a month in my part time job.
This means in total I have about 10k a year. But I spend (easily) 4 k on art materials and other uni related things. But then I have mortgage / house bills / expenses to pay!
So yeah, it aint an easy life.Green and White Barmy Army!0 -
This girl has been in fostyer care, I should imagine she has family break down and probably nobody but her self to rely on and @ such a young age then IMHO she should be given a leg up, help her now and in a few yrs she will be able to support herself with no more support from the state.
I can understand how you feel, but you must try not to judge people until you have walked a mile in their shoes, there is a lot people dont tell and I should imagine you dont full understand or have full in-depth knowledge of the situation.Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!0 -
I am a full time university student studying teacher training, and the way money is handed out really makes me angry, i get 2,700 a year loan to pay my fees and 3654 a year loan for living accomodation, recently my parents have split up leaving us sunstanitally ALOT poorer, we bsically have enough to survive nothing more, we rang up the lea and asked about the possibilty of me getting more money but they said that they wont believe us until, we send a letter from a solicitor that my mom cant afford to pay for. Now i got about 300 grant from the uni which i dont pay back, however my friends who i beleive whosre parents get alot more money than they say get about 1000 and all becuase i think they cheat the system, it makes me really mad, i travel about 60miles a day to get to uni so therefore my furl bill is extortianate, and i cnt really work apart from a sun and sat job which only earns me 50 quid as my course us so demanding.
sorry aboutb the rant, but im glad i got itoff mychest.:jHas saved so much money since joining this forum, thanks to all you kind people out there :j0 -

You 'believe' and you 'think'! :rotfl:
Don't judge a book by its cover!
If the extra money will help you so much, why can't you get the money together for a solicitors letter? After all, you reckon to gain £700!0 -
Social Services pay her tuition fees.......
.
I understand that social services are obliged to support a child up to the age of 21 if the child has been in care for a MINIMUM of 16 weeks whilst classified as a child. They do get a computer provided and (i think) termly visits from a social worker from their home county (if away from home at uni). I know as a relative does this for Social services.
The question is, would YOU want to have been shoved in local authority care for a minimum of 4 months just to get a bit of help at university?0 -
The system is flawed.
One of my friends has parents with considerably good jobs, they are paying for her Tuition fees, Rent, and give her £350 a month to live off. But she has taken out the loan for the maintenance which she has sat nicely in a savings account building up interest which means when she leaves not only will she be debt free but she'll have all the interest built up off the loan in the savings account.
Now im going to be leaving with about £17,000 worth of debt. Tell me how the system is helping those from poorer backgrounds?
Ha Ha....Sorry rant over____!0 -

Dont judge a book by its cover, I dont like the way your talking thank you. You dont have any idea what my financial situation is and the fact that you say if the extra money will help me that much, reckon to gain £700? Am i not allowed to have my own opinion about people and the system as the last time i checked i can, if you were in my situation you would probably think the same.:jHas saved so much money since joining this forum, thanks to all you kind people out there :j0
