I could do with some advice here guys ....... I've had this raging headache all day and hardly any sleep last night, which is fine, I can handle it - that's what nurofen and early nights are for!! However, now I feel this crappy I figure its possibly best to plough ahead rather than have to go through it all again so my questions are:

    a) is this the best way forward or am I just kidding myself and its not going to be as easy as stick it out for a couple of days and I'll be all better again and only fancy a drink now and then?

    b) I have a trip to scotland booked this weekend, these weekends are notoriously boozie..... is it wise to not drink all this week, go through feeling this crappy, then head straight for a booze fuelled weekend .... am I best cancelling?

Thanks in advance, your advice so far has been fab.

    Hope you're all doing well.

    Cheers x

Have a good day everyone...is Molly the first on this thread to achieve 100 days straight..perhaps we should give her a prize or something?

Bis is being too modest. Typically ;) lol. Molls should get a prize ANYWAY!!!!

GK - I don't know how to advise you wish I could, the decision is ultimately up to you but I really don't know re the whole cold turkey issue cos I don't seem to get the problems for some reason prob jo, eselt, bis, mollyp better to say.

Should not have gone down this road - bound to have offended someone by no name-check. To err is human etc

100 not out on this thread is worth a special prize.

1 not out is prize-worthy in itself....I'm just happy to be not out at the end of every day! The score doesn't really matter...staying the course does...

AF days on this thread have a special sort of significance as they were days together in that sense....

I'd done 200 days before the thread started so that was never on the cards...I've known people who've not touched a drop in over 25 years....and now I reflect on my past, I've met people who don't drink and at the time I wondered why.....now I know....

    if you can, cancel.

This could be the start of the new you and that "you" doesn't do that kind of thing anymore.....a booze-filled weekend after this week could be the worst of both worlds....it's the kind of stuff that can kill you.

Re your situation now....see a doctor, take lots of vitamin supplements, St Johns Wort, milk thistle extract and lots of water....fresh fruit and veg too....

If you can, do some light exercise but see a doctor ideally before you do and good luck....your body's going to have a bit of a shock but, deep-down, it doesn't REALLY want you to drink, so it will welcome your changed lifestyle....it's just that the bits of your body that you need to you use are out of practice...give them chance to catch up and your body will thank you for it.

    Hi Giddy

Can't emphasise enough how good Dr Bismarks advice is- its spot on. It's certainly worth a trip to your GP to let him know what you are planning to do, and get some advice- he knows your history better than any of us and is also the gatekeeper to most of the alcohol health professionals and support agencies too. When I used to go to the GP before a detox attempt he would do a liver function test, and a bloodtest (potassium and Vit B deficiencies are VERY common in drinkers, and can have VERY serious consequences if not tackled), check my blood pressure and examine my abdomen for any signs of liver inflammation-when the results are back you get a really clear idea of your starting point health wise.

Sorry you are feeling crappy- you will get through this, and the physical symptoms will pass over the next few days- then the difficult 'mental' work kicks in as you feel better and gain confidence and feel strong. Can you then go back to being a social drinker, or just drink at weekends?- personally I can't, I either drink until I fall over or I don't drink at all- theres no 'moderation' area of my brain which enables me to approach drinking in anything other than a destructive way, so I don't drink at all- on the other hand I do know people who have gone from being very heavy drinkers, to being occasional drinkers, and they seem to manage this. Some people just drink socially. I'm afraid you have to make the decision here- you have to decide what you want your relationship with alcohol to be.

In terms of the scotland trip I would find it virtually impossible to stay sober whilst everyone was having a boozy time around me. Do you think you could go and not drink? Its up to you-its a tough one.

Really, really good luck, its tough at the moment, but it will be worth it promise.
