    Hi All
Sounds like we are all still battling away!

Jo I think you are right to worry about the wedding-I would feel really nervous about attending and that would mean me convincing myself I needed a few drinks for bravery (new people, being able to talk to people, not feeling self conscious etc.)- and I would probably carry on drinking really aware that OH was looking on with disapproval with a 'there I said you would never be able to keep it together' look on his face. I have been avoiding these sort of get togethers, particulalry family ones as I am very conscious that 'everyboby knows' I have a drink problem and I feel very paranoid and that people are watching me very carefully to see if I slip!!! If you really want to go why don't you drive, then you have a straightforward 'excuse' not to drink, and you can leave early if you like and get back to the kids and not have to stay overnight-the fact you have to return home could be just the motivation you need to avoid having a few. I know what I would probably do if I attended this and stayed overnight- start with best intentions, have a few for dutch courage to face it, carry on drinking to be 'polite', keep drinking, make a fool of myself, have a drunken row with OH, storm off and carry on drinking, clear out the mini bar, wake up in the morning feeling rough, full of guilt and shame, unable to eat, worried about the kids at home, apologise to OH and any one else I have upset, go home and sob because of all the money I have spent which I couldn't afford, have another drink:confused: ....I think I would just stay away, miserable and feeling really neglected and bored on a saturday night, but hey its only a few hours and its great to wake up on a sunday fresh and ready for the day!!!! :j

You mentioned things like xmas and new year etc, and yes I found it impossible not to get caught up in the 'oh well it is christmas so I can have a couple...' debate with myself but if you think about it you can always find a good excuse to have a drink (big gas bill, bad day at work, the weekend, your birthday etc) and there will always be an event or occasion where you can justify yourself having a drink, so it never goes away. This year I just stayed away from all the celebrations because I find it so difficult to be around people who are drinking or drunk when I am sober, as I really do miss it, but next year I'm going to be out and about, probably using 'driving' as an excuse.

Try not to beat yourself up about relapses...very very few people are able to just stop and never drink again, I don't know if I will ever drink again, I can't guarantee I won't and I think about having a drink everyday, but as I get fitter and my mind back I seem to be getting stronger and more able to resist. As long as you think you are going forward more often than you are going backward you are on the right track.

Best of luck with the battle everyone, just keep at it!!!!

couldn't have put it better myself....
just come back from camping again and had my own trial.....arrived late Saturday and was covered in midge bites in half and hour while unpacking.....the itching was driving me nuts and I wondered how I'd get to sleep...cue the dark moments of my trial....

I recognised it for what it was and moved on...

Thankfully, I'm unscathed but it was close......will catch up more later.
For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 2007

  • You nip off for a couple of hours and its like Piccadilly Circus on here again. I would say 'welcome back' gang but I now know you've been here all the time. :D:D:D

Sorry - couldn't resist a couple of beers when I got home - long day and the middle one has just passed his driving theory test today.

I WILL get the resolve back soon - though feeling guilty now I've been on here. :o
