I'm pretty sure you're correct on that, that MS no longer rolls out updates for IE6. And IE6 was quite inherently insecure anyway.

    Yes they do:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (KB944533)

Typical download size: 1.3 MB , 1 minute
Security issues have been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise a system running Internet Explorer and gain control over it. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer

You were all so helpful a while ago when I had probs that I thought I'd pester you again! I want to uninstall IE7 which I can't stand, and reinstall IE6 which I can. I tried oldversion.com but unbelievably nothing happened, not a thing. MS tells me to uninstall 7 first...if I do, will I not be able to get into my homepage, or any other come to that, therefore just have a blank screen or at the most just a word processor? Or doesn't it work like that? I'm not prepared to try it before getting some sound advice from you good guys ;)

I have several version of IE installed alongside IE7 with:

but this really ins't aimed at average web users and it can be a little quirky sometimes - You're also missing out on the security.

    Alternatively -
If you don't want to go for a different browser like firefox or Opera then a compromise might be something like Maxthon (which uses IE and has some of the same feel) - though I haven't tried it in a long time so don't know what the current one is like

Isn't that a general IE update that happens to also apply to IE6 as well as IE7? I'd be surprised if they were still working on security issues that were exclusive to IE6's system.

Don't know but it said "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (KB944533)" so I assumed it was for IE6 when I installed just after I posted this morning.

Thanks for pointing that out. It looks like IE6 support will continue for some time:

I did this MaxConnectionsPerServer registry hack yesterday and believe it put actual go faster stripes on web page loading speed (IE 6.0):

I would upgrade the wife's PC to IE 7.0 but we would then lose the freeby version of Roboform that works so nicely with IE 6.0. Use Firefox too which has it's own pros & cons.

Now totally confused  but thank you all for your replies anyway. I guess I will just leave well alone and struggle on with 7 until I'm so used to it I'll forget 6. I must say though, that 'tabbed browsing' IMHO only is a gimmick I can do without, I keep clicking on the x top right and getting that most annoying of messages 'do you want to close all etc etc' when of course I don't! . Perhaps I'm missing something...brain?

As for changing the search engine completely thanks but I'll leave that to you experts who have spent a lifetime on computers, not just arrived a few short years ago as I did.

Just to make you  even more, my last query was about a poorly and very slow pc. The answer was in my second sentence all along...my 11 g/son read it and told me to put all my photographs on a disc. Result - a much faster start up and no more breakdowns, so problem solved, proving the answer isn't always as complicated as the way techies think.

Thanks again for all the advice/suggestions. I will catch up with 21st c. Eventually :rotfl:

Personally, I find it a great improvement. But if you really don't like it then it can easily be disabled in IE7:

I thought it was not possible to roll back to version 6 from version 7? Something about changes to the registry?
