Abbey Credit Card

Options
I applied on line for an Abbey credit card in mid January and after not hearing anything from them for a couple of weeks gave them a call to find out what was happening with my application. I was told that it had been approved and my documentation would be in the post in the next couple of days. Having waited a further week I called again and was told the same thing!!!! Im not happy as I wanted this card to balance transfer from my current 0% interest card and now due to poor administration on the part of Abbey, I am now going to be charged a months interest whilst I apply for another card. Needless to say I won't be going with Abbey.

Par for the course: Abbey are not good at administration, and so have to offer financial sweeteners as a substitute for good service.

Since you have gone to the trouble of getting this card, and have allowed them to conduct searches that will reduce your credit score, you might as well make use of it when it eventually comes. Just don't let them make any money out of you.

Yes. Use it for grocery shopping up to the end of March and get 5% cash back (paid monthly).

    Actually July.

If you want the card quickly go in to an Abbey branch, they will print the paperwork there and the balance transfer will be made the same day.

I was thinking of applying for an Abbey card too but also need it quickly - is the quickest way to simply go to a branch in the first place or apply online and then follow it up at a branch?

    many thanks

    I applied mid-January, too.
Phoned today to hear they received my application on 22/1 and abandoned it on 22/1!
Had to apply again whilst I was on the phone. Got a very generous credit limit, though. Will help my stooz pot no end!

The whole application needs to be made in the branch. If you apply online the branch won't be able to get in to the application. In a branch though they can print the application and confirm the new card number straight away, takes about 10-15 minutes.
  • The 5% cashback on supermarket shopping using the abbey credit card isn't supposed to apply to purchases of petrol, well guess what, there is a way around it. Supermarket petrol stations use a different retail code to the main supermarket which is how they know that it is petrol. If you buy a gift card to the amount you intend to spend at the petrol station, you'll get 5% on that too. Be careful though because not all supermarkets let you spend gift cards on petrol. ASDA DON'T! However, TESCO DO!!! Don't know about the others. At tesco it takes up to an hour (as I found out this morning when I tried to pay for my petrol) for the gift card to activate so I suggest you buy gift card at customer services on your way in to do shopping, then after shopping your gift card should have had time to activate. Tesco express petrol don't accept gift cards as payment though!!! I double checked with customer services that gift card purchases would go through as same merchant code as shopping and they assured me that they do! Be careful with your spend though as the £1000 spend soon adds up, then swap to another cashback card as abbey don't offer any cashback after this has been reached. Please let me know if you've found this useful. Regards.

Chatterbox, what a briliant loophole, thanks very very much!

I'm going to go and try it tomorrow when I'll be using my 5p off per litre voucher also!
  • I applied for an abbey card, thought everything was ok then got a credit agreement in the post saying they had recently written to me asking me to sign it.

I had not received a thing to this point but I signed it and returned it, and then two days later I got two copies of the same thing asking me to sign credit agreement for the card and direct debit set up.

I thought OMG what is going on? How come I have had 3 of these agreements and by sending three are they gagging for customers.

I too want the card to do a balance transfer from a barclaycard gold account and althought it may only be £800 transfer its going to save me a bit and give me time to clear it without incurring to much interest.
