this will take a few days (72 hours) but will do it for free, quicker if you pay
Try now risk free
You only need to pay for the service if you want priority access and only once we have demonstrated your passwords are recoverable
http://www.loginrecovery.com/
you will need the CD version as I suspect the laptop has no floppy drive
you will need to use F2 to change the boot order to CD drive first, then put the CD in and follow the instructionsEx forum ambassador

Login Recovery is a service to reveal user names and recover passwords for Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003 and Vista. As long as you have physical access to the computer, your passwords can be recovered
By following three simple steps, 98.5% of passwords are recovered in less than ten minutes. This service does not overwrite passwords, does not write anything to the hard drive and does not alter the computer in any way, it simply reveals your passwords.
*For immediate access to decrypted passwords, the priority service is available for GBP 12.95 + VAT (£15.22) (USD 29.95 or approx. EUR 22). Alternatively a free service is available by waiting upto 72 hours (One free request every three months).Ex forum ambassador

did the laptop come with any recovery dvd's or anything like that?
You might be able to restore your lappy to new but it may wipe out any personal info on it0 -
Don't bother with the brute force method used by loginrecovery - if he was really nasty and made the password long (>10 chars) and random then it could take hours or even days to crack it
Download the CD image from http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/ and use it to change the password. I have no connection with the guy but have used his CD & floppy in both personal and commercial situations since the days of NT4.

And for future reference (although I'm sure you'll do this now anyway) remember to backup physically off the the laptop. I usually give that advice with hard drive failure in mind but I suppose it equally applies to spiteful ex's."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Righto.
Loginrecovery - I burnt the info to a disc and went to F2 to change the boot sequence, but it just then came up that there was nothing bootable, so changed it back.
and the home.eunrt one, I don't actually understand his website.:o
I have lots to do today, so need to go and tidy up and do some deep breathing stuff. Then I'll be back!0 -

If you can, try this (Ophcrack)
http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/
click download n follow instrustions0 -
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ is a handy cd to have around.
It's got the prog !!!!!! linked to on it.
http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/ubcd/ubcd411.iso is a direct link to the CD image.
You can burn the CD image with http://www.imgburn.com/
Failing all that, and this is a last resort because it's a pain in the !!!!, you could whip out the hard drive and plug it into another pc to recover your coursework. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -

Could it be that you burnt the image as Data, rather than selecting 'Burn Image to CD'?0
