Bypass a password help!

 My ex-OH was nice and spiteful enough to put a password on laptop last night and I need some help desperately.

He has put a user password on, so it boots up to the main windows user page and asks for a password. I have tried hundreds of words but its like a needle in a haystack.

I have been to the F2 prompt on boot up but that didn't work. I went to the security setting and set an admin and system password but neither of these bypass the user one.

There does not appear to be a "safe mode" for start up.

Its XP pro on a Vostro 1500. Not wanting to sound like a charity case, but I saved damn hard to get this new laptop and have only had it 2 days. I cannot afford to take it anywhere, so I am really really relying on you guys.

I am cross to say the least. Spiteful **&^&*%)£*

  • Can you confirm, is it a windows user password?

Definately a user password - the user name comes up (only one user on the laptop) and its asking password.

Its on the blue screen that comes up after the Windows XP logo on boot up. (It gives me the option to log off on bottom left and bottom right tells me I can change user settings after I have logged on).

    Thanks!

If you've only had it for 2 days just follow the instructions for restoring the laptop to its original state.

Did it come with restore disks?
    Have you got the manual?
    Is there a restore partition?
Is there help on the Dell website/forum?

And don't explain how you got round the problem.

The manual is not a hard copy - its a file on the laptop!!!! I do have a restore disk.

But I wrote an Essay for my OU course when I got it. I'm gonna loose that, aren't I..........................
  • Try this,

turn it off completly. restart it and keep pressing f8 on & off until it gives you the option to start in safe mode.

start in safe mode, go to control panel then user accounts then remove password.

    might work

    dont you just love ex's?

ps , to do the above, you need to go into the "hidden" account that comes up in safe mode called adminstrator

    Yes,

Do you have a USB key, a blank CDR and access to a PC with a CD writer?

If so you could download a copy of Damn Small Linux, write it to CD, boot up the laptop from the CD, copy the OU course to the USB key.

If not I'll leave it to the password crackers.
  • thanks browntoa,

Nope. It now comes up with two user names - administrator and mine....

And still asking for passwords on both.
