Criminal_smile - the point is that these programs all auto-start on Windows start-up, so an icon for running them on the Desktop is no help. As has been said, the programs in my case usually auto-start fine, but they just don't deposit an icon in the System tray to allow access to the programs' features.


Neither is it consistent which programs display an icon and which don't. So it's a bit difficult to trace the fault.

I hope this clarifies the problem and thanks for your help.

I'll try the Tweak-UI mentioned and see what happens with that.

I tried the Tweakui that you linnked above and the icons showed up for once but then back to usual randomness again. I now only have 2 icons, the Norton Antiviris, and the Modem! It's pathetic!

Any more ideas?

To check if volume icon is enabled; Control panel>sounds,speech,and audio devices>sounds and audio devices>volume tab and enable 'place volume icon on taskbar'.
M/S anti-spyware icon go to options>settings>general settings.

This particular fix will only work if SP2 is installed on XP.

Goto 'START' >> 'Control Panel' >> 'Add/Remove Programs'
On the left hand side, click on 'Add/Remove Windows Components' >> 'Networking Services' >> 'Details'
From here, uncheck the checkbox for 'UPnp User Interface', then click 'OK'

Reboot, and (hopefully) problem solved.

edit: there are other options which may work, but try this one first. It may not work for all machines.

I now have 8 icons in my system tray! Thanks for that tip and I hope it works for Wombat. :beer: :cool:

Thanks very much for your help. It's been one of those really annoying quirks that I hadn't got around to looking into myself.
