WIN XP Startup

Options
Whenever Windows starts-up, I'm supposed to see the following program icons in the system tray (bottom right of screen):

Norton Internet Professional
Norton Antivirus
Microsoft Antispyware (Beta 1)
MSN Messenger
Yahoo Messenger
Hotkey Setup Prog (for keyboard)
Volume Icon (for adjusting volume)

However, I very rarely, in fact, never, get all these icons showing up at the same time. Most of the time it's just Norton Antivirus and MSN Messenger. I think the other programs still run in the background but I can't be sure. I press CTRL ALT and DEL to bring up the program list but can't make out the programs running because of the shortened codes used instead of the real names. I know that Yahoo messenger always runs even if the icon isn't showing because this is Ypager.exe and is always in the list.

Can anyone help with getting these icons to show up properly or know the reason for this? Thanks in advance :D

    Hi,

Just a thought but XP sometimes hides some system tray icons.

Is there a left pointing arrow on the left hand side of the system tray? If so click it and it might reveal more icons underneath.

If you right click on a clear space of the system tray then click properties; in the new window click customize; if you click each of the current items you can hide/show or hide when inactive.

Thanks for that. I forgot to mention that I have disabled the check box saying "hide inactive icons".

This is an issue of the icons not showing at all rather than just being hidden. Any other ideas? :D

Icons are recaled from an iconcache and like yourself they sometimes get lost, booting in safe mode reloads all icons from programs and creates a new cache, this is what to do in win98 unless anyone knows how you could try that.

I am running Win XP but will try that - which "F" key do I press to boot into safe mode??
  • Depends on the make of your PC. Try 'F8' first, and if that doesn't work 'F10'. Press it repeatedly as soon as the boot procedure detects your hard drive.

Can I ask why you want the icons to show though

I have exactly the same problem and the reason I'd like them to appear is so that I can click on them to actually make them do something, like scan the PC for viruses, alter/check settings in the programs, access the Learning Filter of Spamihilator, check for program updates etc. etc. None of these can be done unless the program icons are visible.
  • Not to everyone's taste I know, but tidier imho. Have a folder on desktop for shortcuts to programs (I know XP automatically does this for unused desktop icons, can't remember if 98 does it?). Only then takes 2 extra clicks to get where you want to go, and no clutter on desktop.

I tried booting into safe mode but the icons don't all show up :o

I want to see the icons because of the same reason given by Wombat earlier. Also I'm not sure they do actually run because when the Norton icon doesn't show, Windows Security Center goes mental saying I'm not protected etc.

    Any other ideas?

Hmmm, you could try downloading Tweakui (HERE) and use the Rebuild Icon Cache feature under one of the sections.
