After grabbing a bargain in Sainsburys i still have 1 1/2 tubs left of luxury dried fruit and nuts.
Can anyone help with a recipe - to allow me to use them up.
I'm not really a cereal person at the moment - or i would have just added them to muesli.
A cake recipe would be great if anyone has one.

Any basic fruit cake recipe should work as long as you chop the fruit and nuts a bit first, I would have thought.
You could make chewy and crisp bars (like Trackers) by adapting a flapjack recipe - I have just suggested this on another thread so hasten to add that I am not in the employ of the Flapjack Council of Great Britain
You need: 250g porridge oats; 150g butter; 75g sugar; 75g golden syrup.
Combine butter sugar and syrup in a saucepan over a gentle heat and stir until melted. Stir in about 3/4 of the porridge oats. Now add in your fruit and nuts. You can add more porridge oats if the mixture seems sloppy or not bother if it is stiff. Pour into a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper and bake at Gas 4 for 25-30 minutes. Allow to cool for 5 minutes and then cut into "bars".
I always add nuts/seeds/chocolate to the basic flapjack recipe and my family then devour them with depressing speed and demand to know why there are no more to be had. Still, at least it's better for them than processed stuff...0 -

hi all, ive got a bag of this value fruit, i was gonna make a fruit cake with it, my recipe is asking for 9 0z of raisins and sultanas, and 7 oz of currants. ive also about 150g of currants separate to use up, what do you think my cake would end up if i used what i got??? or should i just go get all the right ingredients? has anyone made a fruit cake with just the value fruit?? it also has mixed peel in it, i know if you buy all the separate ingredients its quite costly isnt it. where is the cheapest/best place to buy fruit?

Yes just use the bag up that you've got. I've also got one of the same in my cupboard and keep promising hubby a fruit cake!

Apparently if you soak the fruit for a while it helps "plump" it up, especially good for the value stuff which tends to be a bit smaller and somehow less "juicy" than the the more expensive brands. You could add just a small amount of sherry or port (about a tablespoon) to the soaking mix. This seems to make it a bit more luxurious.
I keep a bottle of fairly basic cheapo port which I add to loads of things - there's some in my beef stew which is simmering away in the slow cooker right now. It's much cheaper than using wine etc. You only need a bit so a bottle lasts for ages.
I tend to use sherry for sweet things, puddings cakes etc and port for stews, casseroles, gravies and sauces.0 -

anyone got any ideas what i can use almost a whole bottle of gran manier on?? i tried to make a chocolate orange cake, but it didnt seem to have much orange flavour??? any ideas what i did wrong???0 -
Did you put some orange zest in the cake? Take the zest off and squeeze the juice of an orange to put in the cake
Drink the Gran Marnier? Save for emergencies? Use in a trifle? Use to take sticky labels off? Wait until next Xmas and set the pudding on fire with it. It will keep for ever0
