I just thought you would like to know of a happy ending to one of the Trojan dialer stories.
I was with OneTel (not any more) and noticed on my online bill a call charge to an 0909 number costing £19.49, a call I had never made.

I contacted B.T. OneTel and ICSTIS,non of who wanted to know,ICSTIS suggested writing to the company (in Spain) this I did without much hope, but by return of post on 20th August I received a reply appologising and offering a refund if I supplied bank details. After speaking to my bank I decided to do this giving details of an account with very little money in it,as the bank suggested it could take up to 4 weeks for an international transfer I waited, after 4 weeks with no refund I wrote again. They replied by email that they required confirmation of an IBAN number, I had put in an extra digit,so I emailed the correct number and waited, another email from me was required, but I phoned my bank last night
and the money for the phone call and the cost of my postage had been credited to my account, result :)

So don`t give up hope if you have had any of these dialers, just keep trying.

Yes well that was the main reason I left OneTel as they said they could not block 09 numbers,so I did not want to take the risk again and moved to TalkTalk. Also that was on 24/7 dial up and I am now on broadband so hopefully it won`t happen again

  • I had one of these try and install itself, bit pointless effoer for it since I'm on broadband. But my friend did actually get mugged by one though and got huge phone bill, not very pleased as you can imagine.

It's pointless complaining to your phone company, they just want the money back. Why not complain to someone who does have the power to order them to shrink the bill to normal, https://www.otelo.org.uk .

The problem is most of these companies are in Spain or somewhere similar and therefore not registered with
Otelo which means they can not do much.

Does it cost anything for you to get BT to block premium rate calls on your line?

    Thanks

No, but if you do not use them for your calls they will not guarantee the block

B.T. will block premium numbers but if you use another CPS they will not guarantee that these calls will be blocked as you will be using another CPS (e.g TalkTalk)
for your calls and they cannot be responsible for another carriers calls

  • This is a silly question but I assume that as we use ADSL not 56k dialup, dialers can't have access to my phoneline?
