I think people are expecting more than what it is designed for. It is a laptop for kids, designed to be simple to use. I am considering reserving one for my 8 year old stepson. He plays cbeebies, toontown, lego etc.
  • The government is running a 'computers for pupils scheme' where each education authority is given a pot of money to give a laptop/pc to disadvantaged children of secondary school age. From what I understand the individual LEA are given licence to allocate 'x' amount of schools with laptops and I think it's aimed to give children who receive free school meals a laptop.

Full details can be found here...

    http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/wholeschool/ictis/computers_for_pupils/

So before spending money on a laptop, perhaps check with school or your LEA to see if you will be entitled.
  • I have pre ordered one for each of my girls (9 and 7) they will be perfect for what my girls would use them for- for that price they are perfect... i would never buy a dead expensive one for them... what would be the point when they would only use it for the basic things a child would need or want to use it for? all these techie people that are saying how rubbish they will be... NOT FOR KIDS THEY WONT BE!!!!!!!!!! They will be perfect and at a perfect price too! :j my girls go on my laptop every now and again to either google for info on school projects or to go on the cbbc site and things like that! they will be well happy with their own laptops!!! :T

  • ok - i have NO IDEA what you are all talking about lol

is this actually ok for what it states, ie kids of school age?
my daughter is just 7 and desperate for a laptop but i begrudge paying £300+ for her when i know all she wants to do is go on the web and use word/paint

I think you're expecting more than it's designed for!

The cbeebies and lego websites are full of Flash, which this laptop will not have.

Toontown tells me that it doesn't like my Firefox in Windows, let alone Linux.

    Good luck! :money:

Again. I really don't think the cbbc site will work on them (along with all other Flash based sites). But obviously, you know better than all of us techies. So go for it!

Will it be suitable for any kids websites? Really hoping you say yes as I have reserved 2

Erm...hate to be the one that points this out - but Elonex have been having major financial difficulties of late.

I'll do some digging around and try to find the article but I know that PC Pro magazine actually made a statement advising people not to buy from them.

Elonex UK was sold to a Newcastle printer cartridges firm in June last year - the warranties for there goods was cancelled and a new company called (forget the name) started charging customers for warranty - they also have had some very dodgy dealins with the directors of Time & Tiny computers - 2 firms I always avoided at all costs!!
Treat others as you would like to be treated :A
