Emirates online check in and extra legroom seats....

Many airlines offer an at airport upgrade for a fee, this being considerably less than paying for a normal BusClass ticket.
I know most short haul charter flights now charge for extra legroom seats at check in, generally £30-40 each way.
Never heard of being able to upgrade to business class at check-in except where the airline upgrade people for there own reasons. This has never happened to me (unfortunately), seems to happen a lot to and from the states.
Anyone any experience of Emirates doing this and at what cost??0

Don't know about Emirates (though if they do, it still will not be cheap, and the economy product is very good in itself), but Virgin certainly do.
On the way back from EWR I asked about paying for an upgrade to PE, and got told that it would cost approx $1500. Needless to say I did not accept their kind offer! However, I got talking to a group of six that had asked to upgrade after me. They had been offered the chance to upgrade for $100 each as long as they paid in cash! They were on the same ticket type as me, so that wasn't the reason for the difference in fare, and with the condition that they paid in cash, I can only assume that this was going in someone's back pocket? :eek:Gone ... or have I?0

Just spoke to Emirates CS who say that I can upgrade at check-in if there are still
business class seats available, but cannot give me any idea how much it might cost.
Interestingly, they said check-in opens 3 hours before, not 4 hours as I was told at the airport.0

 .
It's pretty much what's available on the day...the Emirates flights from Bham are normally full as they're taking you to the main hub for Asia and the Middle East, plus you're still in holiday season for Asia and India.....you might get lucky, or maybe stand more chance on the next leg from Dubai out to KL or Singapore.
They have a travel desk at Bham, which might be open earlier then the check-in counter.0

Good to know that at least the Birmingham route has finally caught up with Manchester with regards to the aeroplane used. Mr Sunshine flew into there at xmas and got his return journey changed to leave from Manchester due to the uncomfortableness on the older style plane.0

The problem with this is quite apparent... you pay the bucks, board the plane...then....nothing.....a little late to come back and give the person a smack in the mouth.Founder member MSE Jet Airways Mile High Club

I enquired last year about up-grade costs at check-in from Glasgow to Dubai. The flight was very busy in business (always is i'm told) and from my 3 experiences on it it was full each time. Anyway check-in said it would be £1000 each one way!!!!!!!!! She gave us a 3 seat row to ourselves in economy as it was quiet and i blagged a glass of champagne each as it was my husband's 40th, we flew home business (flight full) on airmiles redemption0

I think Birmingham have used both planes for years, one in the afternoon and one in the evening.
I have to say, we find the older airbus planes more comfortable with wider bouncier seats....they just have a little less legroom and the old entertainment system is like playing with an Atari.
The 777's may specify a little more legroom, but you often can't get your feet right underneath the seat in front due to the ICE box being there..and the seats are firmer and narrower.
Neither of the Business Class products are truly fabulous either....much more bang for your buck elsewhere.0

Just back from Bangkok via Dubai with Emirates. Did the same trip last year on the way to Os. Every flight was full. Every flight delayed and no chance of an upgrade. We checked in online which just saves having to queue up at the airport. They're building a new Emirates terminal at Dubai so, at the moment, everyone is bussed out to the plane. It takes ages.0

Don`t you have to queue at check-in to get rid of your luggage anyway?0
