I get child benefit for one child as the other is 17 now.He lives at home, doesnt work at the moment as he cant leave the house due to a hopefully temporary mental illness, and he wont claim benefits.

have you thought about claiming carers allowance for him?

PLease, realise drinking will not help this problem sweets :)
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

He should be able to apply for DLA, although you sometimes have a fight for mental health problems, so please get a Welfare advisor to help you with the form (local CAB should be able to help you find one).
Sorry to hear what happened to him and I hope the psychiatrist helps.

  • .This is what I should pay but like I said have not paid 2 of my cc,s for 3 months and have maxed out my overdrafts.

Income -from Child benefit, maintenance arrears , tax credit and £100 a month on ebay is £400....
TOTAL OUT SHOULD BE £761.68 NOT COUNTING THE OVERDRAFTS AND NOT COUNTING ANYTHING FOR THE KIDS(CLOTHES,BITHDAYS,XMAS)

    (PLUS I HAVE 2 OVERDRAFTS TOTALLING £1,700)
I forgot to add my prepayment certificate for prescription charges too.

    Hi Rainbowbrite -

Welcome to the forum. I don't know much about how it actually works (so please take advice from someone who does!), but I think it might be useful to look into bankruptcy. You've seen it yourself in your SOA - the numbers don't add up by a long way. You are getting deeper in debt every month. Where are you going to be in a year from now? It's time to take control of the situation.

If you pursue this option, then it may be worth pausing for a moment before shifting large chunks of debt to your partner's credit cards.

I wish you the best in a difficult situation. Keep your chin up!

List on non profit dent agencies here for you.
Good that you can now see why you are struggling so much. I dont think people were analysing yur relationship - just trying to understand what is what so they can help you. At the end of the day you have to do what is right for you but I would ring one of the agencies ASAP to see what your options are...bankrup would have major implications and personally I would avoid it if possible. While you may not like the suggestion I hope that you will be able to sit down with your partner & work through this tog. You've been togeather a long time and hopefully can work through this as a couple...hugs for you!

    Hi rainbowbrite
I don't post much on debt solutions ...Just to say I think you know you can only solve this as a couple ..It will also do wonders for your relationship if you can learn to do this together ..
If it helps to broach the subject let your partner see this thread ...Blokes don't always do stupid stuff 'cos their mean ..They also do it because they are stupid ..
He has to see it is in his interest to help you ..And you need to see that you need his help ..
Good luck and welcome aboard ....You've just climbed into a life boat :)

I contacted all my creditors last year about the end of September using templates I found on this site.I told them I no longer had an income from employment and only had child benefit and maintenance coming in.I told them all I didnt know how long I could keep paying the monthly minimum payments and asked if they would note that I was in financial difficulty due to change in circumstances and stop all interest payments so that we could arrange a repayment plan which I could stick to.They all said no.
Since then, not only have they not stopped the interest but my cc interest rates have increased.
I used my overdrafts to keep paying them but am frequently over my limit on those now too.I get cc,catalogue and bank charges constantly so all my money goes in charges and fees and the money I owe keeps increasing even though I stopped spending 6 months ago.

Personally you need to be as persistent with them as they are with you when they call you to try and get payments.

Sit down and phone them all - and if you get no joy, call back and speak to someone who may be a bit more sympathetic.

    xx
  • Thanks everyone.I didnt open my wine in the end.My partner and I had a bit of an argument but then stayed up till about 4am drinking coffee to stay awake and going over our finances, both of our finances.I forced him to show me his bank statements. He is in as bad a state as I am financially. His SOA is simpler than mine but essentially we are ending every month in the red by hundreds so have both ran up credit card debts over the years which are now out of control.

He has a very good wage but is salaried so cannot increase his income through overtime. He works about 9 hours a day with 3-4 daily hours commute 6 days a week and sometimes goes in on Sundays too for just an hour or two.He likes his job even though the hours are long.

Add this to mine to get an overall picture.
Income is his salary monthly £1,580(thats a really good wage and I an embarassed that we are still struggling on that.

    Outgoings
    mortgage £580
    Loan £200
    council tax £155
M&S life insurance(2xpolicies of £6 for each of us) £12
    TV licence £12
    Internet service £18
halifax credit card £150(0%, I dont know the balance but the payments are 2.5% of the outstanding balance)
Mint credit card £150(0% and same as above)

total outgoings are £1,277 off the £1,580 salary so should be left with £303 a month in the bank but never has anything left.He buys work lunches and also buys some stuff at B&Q for the house repairs every week usually.I will ask him to keep reciepts for everything so we know exactly where the £303 is going to but he guesses he spends £30(£5 a day) a week on work lunches and £40 a week on pipes, bits of wood and cement etc for the house,so that would be the money gone. The only other things he buys is maybe some chewing gum, bottled water, screen wash and anti-freeze for using in the the work truck.

Taking that into consideration we are still then ending the month down by £361.68 every month and thats with me making £100 on ebay.
Obviously I need to increase my income and will start on that but can anyone see any areas where we may be able to cut back.I dont think we overspend at all and definately dont spend on any of the usual culprits such as going out or holidays, but we must be doing something wrong?

Just wanted to add that all of the loan and cc debt is built up just paying for repairs on the house and stuff to go in the house, double glazing was £12,000,partial roof repair was £6,500,new boiler was £2,500,garden shed £400,all the stuff in our house from the sofas to the curtains to the paint on the walls were purchased on credit cards so you can see how that all adds up over the years. Its not as if we live in a palace or anything,we have a colapsed ceiling at the minute, serious damp problems on one side of the house, more urgent roof repairs needing done and no proper bathroom as the floor fell through because of dry rot.We cant even afford to fix those things.
  • My partner still has a really very good credit rating as he has never missed a payment or paid late at all and has a credit card with £15,000 credit available at a low rate(maybe even 0%) he could use.He has a couple of new ones at 0% too which he hasn,t put anything on yet with £2,500 available on one and just £1000 on the other.Do you think it would be worthwhile to move my expensive cc debt onto these or are we past hope already?

Good morning, glad you both talked.

Are you now seeing the debt as a joint thing ? Before I'd transfer as much as I could off the high interest cards onto the low interest I'd ring CCCS in the morning they may suggest a DMP which could get some of the interst frozen giving you some breathing space. I'd start looking straight away for any sort of job (it will put food in the table). Transfer the utilities (using Quidco - getting some cashback down the line) and see if there is anything your son can claim ? (poor love) Did he claim for the attack from the Criminal Injuries people ?

    Good luck
